How to create custom filters

I'm using data-binding where the data isn't a simple object, rather it's a document fragment.

I would like to do something like:

<some-custom-element data="{{documentFragment .items :lastChild as baz">
</some-custom-element>

dfreedm suggested on irc that a filter might be a good way to implement this, but I see not documentation for it on the polymer site.

How to create a custom filter to implement this OR perhaps is there another way?
