What's the scoop with _style in polymer templates?

I figured the best way for me to understand webcomponents in general and polymer in particular was to look at the source code for interesting components.

In the core-drawer-panel source, there's a lot of items with _style attributes. I'm not sure I grok what that does- do they get turned into style attributes after the {{}} variables are bound?
