What's the deal with <property>?

I've seen this tag being used in the core-meta and x-meta elements but I cant quite figure out exactly what it is and how it is used. The core-meta component page uses it in the example but doesn't explain what it does. The demo page doesn't use it at all.

It's used to specify the properties that will show up in the properties inspector of the designer tool.
