Does anyone have information on polymer's compatibility with the new mobile-chrome-apps toolchain and especially the chrome webview version it uses.

Polymer should behave similarly to how it does in Chrome Apps on desktop, I imagine. I also think that it uses whatever webview is available on the device.

Joe is more likely to know for sure.

+ebidelman in case he wants to chime in, @mmocny and @agrieve from Mobile Chrome apps

Since Mobile Chrome apps use whatever the webview on the device is, I would imagine that the polyfill version of Polymer would be used in those cases.

Michal/Andrew, have you guys done any testing with Polymer?

Played with this today by creating a sample app: https://github.com/MobileChromeApps/mobile-chrome-app-samples/tree/master/polymer

Status:
- Works on iOS6, iOS7
- Had a bug on KitKat, which I've just checked in a fix for (didn't make it into c...@0.0.4)
- Does not work pre-KitKat (Polymer team isn't even attempting this I don't think)

Given polymer afaik requires a chrome based Webview that indeed limits to KitKat or roughly 2% of the android installed based.

Have you guys considered embedding a build of  Chromium in the apk generated by your cca toolchain ? That would greatly expand the reach for polymer based apps but also for other chrome apps that require a modern browser on Android.

That's certainly on the wish list, but it's not on the near-term roadmap.

What’s the size of Chromium binary on Android?

Oh well. Was worth asking the chrome apps team :-).

Time to ask the polymer team I guess: Any way we can get support for non chromium webviews on android 4.0  to 4.3 ?

Yeah, the size is the biggest drawback. It's around 16meg and is slower to start-up than the system webview.

Well for polymer based apps that would mean the difference between 2% of the android installed base and 80%+. So that is 16Mb that would be well spent if that was an option in the toolchain.

It is pretty much that or the polymer team supporting non chromium webviews on android 4.0.

Short of one those 2 solutions mobile-chtrome-apps+polymer" is DOA for at least 18-24monthsuntil KitKat catches up. That is somewhat unfortunate given both are key elements of the Google mobile html based UI stack

Andrew,

What can we do to get that bumped up in the priority list ?
