Removing label placeholder inserted above paper-input or paper-input-container

I have a need to place a border around a paper-input element and apply a background color to the prefix icon and input element.

It appears there is a placeholder getting inserted on the paper-input-container level:

which is causing the input html element and the prefix icon to shift down the height of that placeholder. Is there any way to disable placeholder from being inserted without actually modifying the paper-input-container directly or to hide it so that it doesn't affect the height of the paper-input-container?
