Tonya, if you are talking about the company (I assume you are as you capitalized the name), it's a giant scam. Google it and read about all the complaints. If you are talking about the plant being used as a "colon cleanser," that is dangerous for anyone. Many nutrients and medications are absorbed into the body in the intestines, so if you eliminate everything in your colon, harm could be caused. Ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Hello, I  have been taking Melaleuca vitamins for over 5 years. Curious to know why Melaleuca is listed on the list of things to avoid? Does anyone know what it contains that makes it harmful to us PLD patients?
Thanks,

Barb,
I was talking about the company. Yet, I have never used the colon cleansing. I am talking about the vitamins for women, the hand soap, and laundry soap.
I wasn't sure what they were referring to when they named Melaleuca in products to avoid. Just want to be clear before I switch vitamins. Thank you for your comments.

Melaleuca alternifolia the herb is tea tree oil. Tee tree oil is to be avoided with PLD. The reasoning is from reading the below articles, melaleuca is a potent endocine disruptor affecting breast tissue growth in young boys. From this it is possible that melaleuca  can ↑  liver cyst growth in PLD.

Since I have been diagnosed with severe PLD polycystic liver disease, thanks to many from this group, I have become an avid ingredients reader. I scrutinize individual ingredients and check them out if they can help or hinder PLD. I am not willing to take any chances of increasing liver cyst growth. Consider the below articles. These studies came from observations which signaled further research.

One reported case of transient gynecomastia in a boy who was using a hair styling gel containing both lavender and tea tree oil suggests that tea tree oil may possess endocrine disrupting activity capable of leading to gynecomastia. Gynaecomastia resolved within a few months of stopping the product, and the Antiandrogen effects of lavender and tea tree oil were confirmed using human breast cancer cell lines.[1][2]

Lavender and Tea Tree Oils May Cause Breast Growth in Boys

The oils did not alter the levels of the usual forms of circulating estrogens and androgens in the boys. “We do not anticipate any long term effects on hormonal levels,” said Derek Henley, Ph.D., the lead NIEHS author on the study. It is unknown whether the oils have similar endocrine disrupting effects in prepubertal girls, adolescents or adults.

“This study clearly demonstrates how clinical observations can be supported by basic science research,” said NIEHS Director David A. Schwartz, M.D.

Hi Tonya.. I have found that some multivitamins made for women contain phytoestrogens (to address hormone changes) .. so it may be worth checking the ingredients for those too.  xo lori

Bees in the USA are dying.
http://cosmiclog.nbcnews.com/_news/2013/03/29/17518793-bee-deaths-stir-up-renewed-buzz?lite

"That's consistent with a mysterious ailment known as colony collapse disorder, which has stirred scientists' concern for the past decade. The malady almost certainly due to combination of factors — including the Varroa mite, a single-celled parasite known as Nosema, several varieties of viruses, and pesticides. Researchers point to one particular class of pesticides, known as neonicotinoids, as a prime suspect.
Neonicotinoid-based pesticides are commonly applied as a coating on corn seeds, but the chemicals can persist in the environment. Although they have low toxicity for mammals, they've been found to have a significant neurotoxic effect on insects, including bees. Several European countries have banned neonicotinoids, the European Union has been looking at a wider ban, and the Environmental Protection Agency is considering new limitations as well. Just last week, a lawsuit called on the EPA to suspend the use of two types of neonicotinoids immediately."

Its not just a USA problem. The UK Government see it as such a serious problem that they have launched a multi million pound research project into the decline of bee hives and colonies.

Thanks Mark for letting us know that other nations too are concerned. This is good that world wide there is interest in bee colony deaths. I really enjoy tupelo honey. It does not cause me liver aches; my cholesterol to rise; headaches; or mood swings.

I love tupelo honey too!! Here in Mexico nobody knows about this honey so I have to buy it on line. Banana with tupelo honey and some cinnamon makes a great desert.

Tupelo rocks.  Whenever I trave l to the SouthEastern USA I seek out apiaries and purchase gallons of tupelo honey. Otherwise I ask our local health food stores to purchase it.  Just picked up 50 pounds of spelt.

In the UK you have another wonderful honey called linden flower honey or lime flower honey. It too is said to be beneficial.

Warmly,

I have added to the red meat page:
Why avoid or limit red meat?
The real culprit, is a little-studied chemical that is burped out by bacteria in the intestines after people ate red meat. It is quickly converted by the liver into yet another little-studied chemical called TMAO that gets into the blood and increases the risk of heart disease.
Researchers studied additional experiments that led to the discovery that a red meat substance no one had suspected — carnitine — seemed to be a culprit. Carnitine is found in red meat and gets its name from the Latin word carnis, the root of carnivore, Dr. Hazen said. It is also found in other foods, he noted, including fish and chicken and even dairy products, but in smaller amounts. Red meat, he said, is the major source, and for many people who eat a lot of red meat, it may be a concern.
The study then tested carnitine and TMAO levels of omnivores, vegans, vegetarians, and examined the clinical data of 2,595 patients. The researchers found that increased carnitine levels in patients predicted increased risks for cardiovascular disease and major cardiac events like heart attack, stroke and death, but only in subjects with concurrently high TMAO levels. Vegans did not have a burst of TMAO but meat eaters did. This is related to their gut bacteria.

Researchers gave meat eaters doses of antibiotics to wipe out almost all of their gut bacteria. After that, they no longer had circulating TMAO in their blood either after consuming red meat or carnitine pills. That meant, he said, that the effect really was because of gut bacteria. But what is it about carnitine that bacteria like? The answer, Dr. Hazen said, is that bacteria use it as a fuel.
Researchers  discovered that the effect was solely because of TMAO; TMAO predicted heart attacks independently of traditional risk factors like smoking, high cholesterol and blood pressure.
Dr. Hazen worries about carnitine-containing energy drinks. Carnitine often is added to the drinks on the assumption that is will speed fat metabolism and increase a person’s energy level, Dr. Hazen said. Carnitine naturally exists in red meat and is also a common ingredient in energy drinks such as Red Bull or Monster. Certain gut bacteria can metabolize carnitine into a potentially harmful substance, trimethylamine- N-oxide (TMAO). Higher levels of circulating TMAO are associated with an increased risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Grape seed extract is good though right? Melaleuca, Inc. makes a supplement called Provex-Plus for lowering blood pressure. Here are the ingredients:
Citrus bioflavanoids 50 mg.
Dried grape skin extract 30 mg.
Dried grape seed extract 25 mg.
Dried Ginkgo Biloba extract (leaves) 10 mg.
Dried Bilberry Extract (berries) 10 mg.

Would this be ok to take or should I just go out and buy grape seed extract at the Health Food Store locally?

Ginkgo Biloba
Ginkgo Biloba can be harmful for cystic kidneys. It shunts blood away from the kidneys toward the brain.
It is also not useful for those at risk for intracranial hemorrhage (aneurysm?).
Melaleuca
Avoid melalleuca
Grape seed extract
Can cause a drop in blood pressure.
Bilberry
beneficial for eye disorders

So far I would avoid Provex-Plus for lowering blood pressure.

My bone scan density results came back today as showing mild osteopenia. My primary care doctor wants me to ask my nephrologist if I can take the drug EVISTA. You know me, I'd rather go the food intake route than medication. What kind of foods should I add to my diet and how much exercise should I get?
Thank you for your advice.

The exercise question is really a question for your medical team. They should be advising you how much and what you should do to get the maximum benefit.
