I almost had to have a second surgery. Fortunately for me, my body corrected itself. It can be repeated but Dr. Nagorney does not like to do it. He can be coaxed into it especially if you are having symptoms. Lori have you had a liver resection?

If this were me, I would not get a gallbladder surgery. I would go straight for a liver resection. They remove ones gallbladder in a liver resection.

I had no dietary changes from having my gallbladder out. I had many dietary changes after my liver resection.

Warmly,
Diane

my ucla doctors are talking to dr nagorney regarding a liver resection.  i'm still hoping to be a candidate.. as my symptoms have been so difficult to deal with.  i have a 7 mm polyp in my gallbladder (which was enlarged on my scan last year.. getting rescanned next week), but i was hoping to avoid gallbladder removal if possible.  do you know if and why they always take it with a resection?

Always, the gallbladder is removed with a liver resection. I think, but do not know, that they take it out because it is too difficult to dissect out with a liver resection. There are so many liver cysts and the field is very vascular.

Lori I hope you can get this done with Dr. Nagorney. He has the expertise and usually a chance for the best outcomes. Dr. Torres or Dr. Hogan can let you know if you are a candidate for a liver resection. I spoke with Dr. Hogan while I was there last. She said for you to call her and she would speak with you.

Warmly,
Diane

Who is your doctor at UCLA? I go to UCLA. They would not do a liver resection on me, I went all the way to Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. I go to a different doctor at UCLA now, (he seems much better!!! ~Raynee~

How was your resection at the Mayo Clinic? How are you doing? When did you have it done?

Warmly,
Diane

Lori, you can get along just fine without a gall bladder. As we get older we tend to have problems of one sort or another with our gall bladders. If we are having abdominal surgery of any type the docs might remove the gall bladder just to prevent problem later on.

I think about more will having  surgery (gallbladder alone removed) help my symptoms? It seems from emails I have received from individuals with PLD, having the gallbladder only removed can go either way– some are relieved from symptoms but most have no change and some even experience an increase in symptoms.

Hello Amy,
I also live in California (Orange County).  I am seen at St Joseph's Cancer Center in Orange.  My primary care provider is supporting me. She knows my specialist and thinks he will also.  I am sorry that it is so difficult for you.  I hope you are able to be linked with the Mayo Clinic soon.  Wishing you the best....
Marie

hi amy.. i'm so sorry that your dr is not supporting you.  i had that experience with a dr at ucla a few years ago.. i met with him once and never went back.  from there, i went to cedars and had a very supportive nephrologist who helped me a lot.  last year he said that he wasn't sure how to proceed next, so i ended up going back to ucla (to different drsO and have had great care.  my hepatologist is dr saab and my nephrologist is dr danovitch.  who is your dr?  from what most people have experienced, you are in the best of hands at mayo.  do you know what you're going to do?

hope you feel better soon..

Lori, I am very interested in speaking with you.  I too am a patient at UCLA and 42 years old, and living with APKD with a very large liver.  I just consulted with Dr. Nagorney and Dr. Torres, but UCLA is not supporting me.  Who is your doctor at UCLA?

Hello All
I found out that both Drs. Nagorney and Dr. Torres are PPO preferred providers in amongst the bluecross blueshield network. If any happen to have health insurance sometimes your primary doctor can give a referral to the Mayo.

Great going Marie in getting support through your primary care physician.
