dear diane and others,

i have read on several of the chats on the liver and pkd discussions that some of you suffer from recurrent UTI. one very effective way to not have it recur, is to look after the health of your gut and urinary tract. unfortunately the usual way to treat UTI is for your gynecologist to give you antibiotics. although this helps to kill the bacteria but it compounds the problem by killing off all the good microbes that in the long run help to keep UTI at bay.

Antibiotics alone is not the answer. many have had a much better result with using probiotics. i am not saying that one does not take the antibiotics for any infection but one must follow it up with probiotics and not for just a while but as part of your prevention regime you should take it continually so that you have the good microbes preventing the bad bacteria from taking hold.

google 'fem dophilus' and you will find a supplement which contains 2 important strains of probiotics lactobacillus rhamnosus GR-1 and lactobacillus reuteri RC-14 that have over 25 years of research and clinical studies done on these 2 strains that have proven to ensure urinary  tract health, all very authoritative. aside from taking probiotics orally, some have used probiotics as vaginal suppositories and they get quick relief.

try it and you will not get recurrent UTI

Dear All
I am old as sin! Really old. I never got UTI until I turned 72. My gyn-urologist says this is very common among older oldies.

It is Chronic UTI in the elderly. Some things I could try are probiotics, hormones. and a drug that turns ones urine acidic.  I am trying very hard to keep myself alkaline.

So now I am taking Imvexxy 4 micrograms.  It has been studied for 25 years and it is useful for women with breast cancer (my sister in law) and for those with PLD Polycystic Liver Disease and low and behold Dr. Torres told me it was fine to take it

I was so surprised, I am still take 125 mg of keflex each night plus Imvexxy twice a week,

That would not work out in the UK.

1. Antibiotics are sorted out between GP, Lab and Renal consultant no matter where the infection is. It takes time to get to GP so some other place like Urgent treatment Centre is a quicker way of getting seen. You then have a pharmacy to find in hospital.

2. Antibiotics are not normally issued without significant proof of infection.

3. You do not get probiotics. You must remember cysts burst but do not always get infections, id say the rate is about on a third of occaisions but can come via either exit to kidneys normally. You must remember when cysts burst releasing the bug cysts contain blood, junk or waste.

4. You rarely get the name of the bug because they rarely can identify it.

5. If you become too ill to be at home or have tried three courses of antibiotics you are admitted and samples are sent to microbiology dept teams for advice as to treatment which could mean a drip antibiotic.

That is too bad. For Chronic UTI > 70 y/o, more than 4 in one year, Keflex 125 mg is used,  This does not give yeast infection or other side effects.  It is a small dose and useful in the USA.

I also take Imvexxy, a very very small amount of hormone, 4 micrograms.  These frequent UTI ( greater than 4 in one year,) can be caused by too little hormone. It has been tried in a twenty year clinical trial and thought to be OK, I use both: Imvexxy  twice a week vaginal suppositories + 125 mg (½ tablet) of Keflex only at night.

Keflex is one of the gps antibiotics. We dont continually use it because it is quick to become allergic to it.

Hormones dont seem to be used. Neither i nor my late mother have had them for uti treatment.

My own urologist ( a male) had Keflex 125 mg. This is a half a tablet. I do get a UA for culture and sensitivity each and every time I get a UTI, Not had one since I started treatment, I am now 73,

My nephrologist gave me antibiotics for a UTI a few months ago. My eGFR plummeted that week and the UTi cleared up only temporarily. I won't take antibiotics again unless absolutely necessary. I'll drink cranberry juice and lots of water, and hope for the best.

Mike you are lucky, Cranberry juice turns the urine acidic, This is how it stops the pain. but it does nothing to clear up the bacteria,

I take antibiotics as i need them, usually not too often. I found out that certain drugs affect the creatinine.(a kidney function test)
