Abstract- Urbanizing Ecologism: Rethinking Radical Ecology in Urban Environments

Ecologism is an environmental political theory about human-nature relationships and their implications for social, cultural and political institutions. Its presuppositions and theoretical concepts are entrenched in arguments regarding the essential affinity between man and ‘wild’ nature. However, taking into account that the majority of the world’s population lives in cities, it seems that ecologism is at odds with urban reality and practices. In order to fill this theoretical lacuna, this paper asks: how can the core concepts of ecologism be applied in an urban environment? This question is entertained in two manners. First, by offering an analysis regarding the relationship between urban society and nature. Second, by taking the work of Friedensreich Hundertwasser (Austrian artist and environmental activist, 1925-2000) as a source of inspiration for urban ecologism. 

Hundetwasser’s works unfold in a wide variety of means including paintings, tapestry, applied art, architecture and written manifests. Throughout the paper, his works are reinterpreted and analyzed as manifestations of urban ecologism. The paper contributes to existing scholarship by bringing the question of ecologism in a built environment into question; and by suggesting a theoretical model that reconciles the tensions of urbanization and ecologism.
