Sibel Edmonds' new book, Classified Woman

Edmonds translated other materials that involved the selling of U.S.
nuclear information to foreigners and spotted a connection to a
previous case involving the purchase of such information. The FBI,
under pressure from the State Department, Edmonds writes, prevented
her from notifying the FBI field offices involved. Edmonds has
testified in a court deposition, naming as part of a broad criminal
conspiracy Representatives Dennis Hastert, Dan Burton, Roy Blunt, Bob
Livingston, Stephen Solarz, and Tom Lantos, and the following high-
ranking U.S. government officials: Douglas Feith, Paul Wolfowitz, and
Marc Grossman.

When Edmonds was hired, she was the only fully qualified Turkish
translator, and this remained the case. In November 2001, a woman
named Melek Can Dickerson (referred to as "Jan") was hired. She did
not score well on the English proficiency test, and so was not
qualified to sign off on translations, as Edmonds was. Melek's husband
Doug Dickerson worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency under the
procurement logistics division at the Pentagon dealing with Turkey and
Central Asia, and for the Office of Special Plans overseeing Central
Asian policy. This couple attempted to recruit Edmonds and her husband
into the American Turkish Council and the Assembly of Turkish American
Associations, offering large financial benefits. But these were
organizations that the FBI was monitoring. Edmonds reported the
Dickersons' proposal to Feghali, who dismissed it.

Dickerson threatened Edmonds' life and those of her family. Edmonds
lost her job, her reputation, her friends, and contact with most of
her family members. She watched Congress cave in to the President. She
watched the government protect the Dickersons by allowing them to flee
the country. She listened to Congressman Henry Waxman and others in
2005 and 2006 promise a full investigation if the Democrats won a
majority, a promise that was immediately broken when the Democrats
took control of Congress in 2007. Edmonds was smeared in the media,
and her story widely ignored when media outlets got parts of it right.
The Justice Department claimed "States Secrets" and maneuvered for a
cooperative judge (Reggie Walton) to have cases filed by Edmonds
dismissed. The government classified as secret all materials related
to Edmonds' case including what was already public. The Justice
Department issued a gag order to the entire Congress.

Fukushima a Ticking Time-Bomb

Nuclear waste experts say the Japanese are literally playing with fire
in the way nuclear spent fuel continues to be stored onsite,
especially in reactor 4, which contains the most irradiated fuel -- 10
times the deadly cesium-137 released during the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear
accident. These experts also charge that the NRC is letting this
threat fester because acknowledging it would call into question safety
at dozens of identically designed nuclear power plants around the
U.S., which contain exceedingly higher volumes of spent fuel in
similar elevated pools outside of reinforced containment.

Alvarez warns that if there is another large earthquake or event that
causes this pool to drain of water, which keeps the fuel rods from
overheating and igniting, it could cause a catastrophic fire releasing
10 times more cesium-137 than was released at Chernobyl. The focus is
on cesium-137 because it easily volatilizes and spreads pervasively,
as it did during the Chernobyl accident and again after the disaster
at Fukushima Daiichi last year.

With a half-life of 30 years, it gives off penetrating radiation as it
decays and can remain dangerous for hundreds of years. Once in the
environment, it mimics potassium as it accumulates in the food chain;
when it enters the human body, about 75 percent lodges in muscle
tissue, including the heart.

"It really requires a major effort," he said. "The United States and
other countries should begin to get involved and try to help the
Japanese government to expedite the removal of that spent fuel and to
put it into dry, hardened storage as soon as possible."

So why isn't the NRC and the Obama administration doing more to shed
light on the extreme vulnerability of these irradiated fuel pools at
Fukushima Daiichi, which threaten not only Japan but the U.S. and the
world?

Nuclear waste experts say it would expose the fact that the same
design flaw lies in wait -- and has been for decades -- at dozens of
U.S. nuclear facilities. And that's not something the NRC, which is
routinely accused of promoting the nuclear industry rather than
adequately regulating it, nor the pro-nuclear Obama administration,
want to broadcast to the American public.

There are 31 G.E. Mark I and Mark II boiling water reactors (BRWs) in
the U.S., the type used at Fukushima. All of these reactors, which
comprise just under a third of all nuclear reactors in the U.S., store
their spent fuel in elevated pools located outside the primary, or
reinforced, containment that protects the reactor core. Thus, the
outside structure, the building ostensibly protecting the storage
pools, is much weaker, in most cases about as sturdy, experts describe
in interviews with AlterNet, as a structure one would find housing a
car dealership or a Wal-Mart.

The outer containments surrounding these spent fuel pools in these
U.S. reactors patently fail to meet the NRC's own "defense in-depth"
nuclear safety requirements.

The Energy Wars Heat Up: Six Recent Clashes and Conflicts


Energy equation is changing ominously as the challenge of fueling the
planet grows more difficult. Many of the giant oil and gas fields that
quenched the world’s energy thirst in years past are being depleted at
a rapid pace. The new fields being brought on line to take their place
are, on average, smaller and harder to exploit. Many of the most
promising new sources of energy -- like Brazil’s “pre-salt” petroleum
reserves deep beneath the Atlantic Ocean, Canadian tar sands, and
American shale gas -- require the utilization of sophisticated and
costly technologies. Though global energy supplies are continuing to
grow, they are doing so at a slower pace than in the past and are
continually falling short of demand. All this adds to the upward
pressure on prices, causing anxiety among countries lacking adequate
domestic reserves (and joy among those with an abundance).

They shoot down of targeting of the civilian population



The U.S. military taught its future leaders that a “total war” against
the world’s 1.4 billion Muslims would be necessary to protect America
from Islamic terrorists, according to documents obtained by Danger
Room. Among the options considered for that conflict: using the
lessons of “Hiroshima” to wipe out whole cities at once, targeting the
“civilian population wherever necessary.”

The course, first reported by Danger Room last month and held at the
Defense Department’s Joint Forces Staff College, has since been
canceled by the Pentagon brass. It’s only now, however, that the
details of the class have come to light. Danger Room received hundreds
of pages of course material and reference documents from a source
familiar with the contents of the class.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff recently ordered the entire
U.S. military to scour its training material to make sure it doesn’t
contain similarly hateful material, a process that is still ongoing.
But the officer who delivered the lectures, Army Lt. Col. Matthew A.
Dooley, still maintains his position at the Norfolk, Virginia college,
pending an investigation. The commanders, lieutenant colonels,
captains and colonels who sat in Dooley’s classroom, listening to the
inflammatory material week after week, have now moved into higher-
level assignments
throughout the U.S. military.

“We have now come to understand that there is no such thing as
‘moderate Islam,’” Dooley noted in a July 2011 presentation (.pdf),
which concluded with a suggested manifesto to America’s enemies. “It
is therefore time for the United States to make our true intentions
clear.
This barbaric ideology will no longer be tolerated. Islam must change
or we will facilitate its self-destruction.”

International laws protecting civilians in wartime are “no longer
relevant,” Dooley continues. And that opens the possibility of
applying “the historical precedents of Dresden, Tokyo, Hiroshima,
Nagasaki” to Islam’s holiest cities, and bringing about “Mecca and
Medina['s] destruction.”

Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Gen. Martin Dempsey, issued an order to
every military chief and senior commander to get rid of any similar
anti-Islam instructional material. Dempsey issued the order because
the White House had already instructed the entire security apparatus
of the federal government — military and civilian — to revamp its
counterterrorism training after learning of FBI material that
demonized Islam.
