WASHINGTON (AFP) – US Senate Democrats were Thursday to unveil their blueprint for overhauling US immigration policy, piling pressure on Republicans on a volatile issue set to shape November mid-term elections.
The issue has gained new prominence with passage of a stringent new law in Arizona, which critics say enshrines racial profiling in the border state and rights groups have vowed to fight in court.
Few analysts predict an overhaul to clear the US Congress this year, with US unemployment near 10 percent, and anger at an estimated 10.8 undocumented immigrants in a nation of about 309 million people.

Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, who was to announce the plan at a 5:45 pm (2145 GMT) press conference, has vowed to pass an overhaul this year but needs at least one Republican to do so.
Democrats were due to unveil an outline heavily focused on securing the US border and setting an up to eight-year waiting period before undocumented immigrants can legalize their status, according to a draft seen by AFP.
"In order to make immigration reform successful, Republicans need to work with Democrats and demonstrate a true commitment to fixing the flaws in America's immigration system to improve our nation's economic and national security," Reid's office said in a statement.
Prospects for a Senate deal fell when a key Republican, Senator Lindsey Graham, backed out of talks with Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer, angered by Reid's plans to move immigration ahead of legislation to battle climate change.
The new Democratic plan, based on the work of Graham and Schumer, calls for recruiting "thousands" of new customs agents and the creation of a new force to help the US Border Patrol, which has some 20,000 in its ranks.
