When Presidents FDR and Harry Truman used the term, "Unconditional Surrender", the whole world knew exactly what they meant by it -- Germany and Italy must surrender entirely to the Allied powers, with nothing at all to negotiate, and could have no say whatsoever in how that was done. OR they must continue fighting down to the last city*, the last soldier, and the final bullet. No other choice was left to them.

(* = Of course, we had used up our entire two-nuke arsenal on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and it might be up to a year before we could produce another one, but Japan didn't know that. As far as they were aware, Truman had an unlimited supply, and would continue to remove city after city from existence until they shouted "ENOUGH!". Besides, we could and did firebomb cities in both countries just as horrifically with non-nuclear incendiary bombs, with total air supremacy.)

The whole world -- enemies, allies, and neutrals alike -- all knew exactly what they meant. And even more important, the whole world knew that they meant what they said.

If it hadn't, we would have had a very different post-War world -- one not nearly as favorable to the United States and to democratic values as it turned out to be.

But now Trump comes along, whose word has less value than the air it takes to speak it, and decides that "Unconditional Surrender" will make a dandy term for him to use as well. Except that nobody knows what he means by it, and neither he nor any of his MAGA proxies and spokespeople have a clue. And even if they did, nobody but nobody believes that he has an attention span long enough to carry it out.

In short, everything Trump touches dies. Including important, eminently useful terms like "Unconditional Surrender".
