Do the helmets and vests frighten you? >>
They ought to frighten ALL Americans who give a damn about living in a free country. Why has your Dear Leader turned the United States into a War Zone?
And masks. Besides the Secret Police aspect, being anonymous seems to bring out the worst in people, whether on social media or in a law enforcement agency.
Their anything-goes attitude toward city residents is made even worse by the ICE agents (who already have below-par recruitment standards) being protected behind combat armor, carrying combat arms, while their superiors make it clear that they'll lie for them and they won't be punished no matter what they do, including killing US citizens if they feel they're "interfering" in any way. Even if the "interference" is just a trained ICU nurse trying to give emergency medical assistance to a woman who has been severely beaten and blinded by ICE agents spraying a caustic chemical in her face and eyes.
On top of everything else, Kristi Noem and DHS have apparently targeted members of extreme-rightwing White Christian Nationalist and other domestic terrorist groups for recruitment to ICE, including Trump's violent, felony-convicted (but now "pardoned" by Trump) January 6 Insurrectionists.
As of January 2026, investigations and reports indicate that
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recruitment for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has targeted members of extremist groups involved in the January 6, 2021, insurrection. Lawmakers have raised concerns that relaxed vetting, high sign-on bonuses, and inflammatory messaging aimed at recruiting participants from the attack.
Key findings regarding ICE recruitment and hiring practices:
- Targeted Recruitment: Reports suggest the DHS hiring campaign specifically aimed at individuals with backgrounds in groups involved in the Jan. 6 insurrection.
- Lowered Standards: To achieve a 120% increase in manpower,, ICE has relaxed vetting standards, shortened training, and removed certain educational requirements.
- Concerns Over Ties: Members of Congress have demanded records regarding whether any new agents were involved in or convicted of crimes related to the Jan. 6 riot or affiliated with far-right groups.
- Questionable Messaging: Recruitment ads have utilized language, such as "We will have our home again," that parallels rhetoric popular with groups like the Proud Boys.
- Mass Hiring: Following these changes, ICE has added over 12,000 new agents, bringing the total to over 22,000 as of early 2026.
These recruitment efforts have drawn intense scrutiny over the potential for hiring individuals with extremist, anti-government, or violent backgrounds.
