I apparently do need to say more.  A 17 year old and an 18 year old having sexual escapades equals pedophilia to Americans.  Reminds me of these two 12 year olds in Utah some years ago.  They jointly decided to try sex with each other.  Well the way the laws were written in Utah at the time, no one can have sex with a 12 year old.  So both kids were charged with statutory rape of a minor.  Sex offender lists for life, etc.

OK. I'm sorry but I don't have to like Lauren Boebert to say that's fucking insane.  

Most states take into account the relative ages of the people involved. I would have thought Colorado surely did. Even my own Georgia has what it calls a "Romeo & Juliet Exception" (though posting the encounter online is not exactly Shakespearian...)

Of course, if he didn't have her permission to post it, then someone needs to beat the shit out of the boy -- does she have any brothers? -- perhaps with the addition of a little jail time in the local lockup (weeks? months?) and some serious lawsuit money. But sentencing a teenager to hard time for having sex with another teenager who's basically the same age isn't just ridiculous but kind of scary.

A few years back in Utah they passed a law that allowed sex for 15 year oilds but their partners could not much of an age gap.

Remember, this isn't about Lauren Boebert herself. Nor is it about a grown man having sex with a little child -- which is coercive rape by both legal and moral definition.

It's about two older teenagers of essentially the same age having sex with each other, which is something that teenagers (especially but by no means exclusively older teens) have been doing with one another since time immemorial, when their hormones are raging the loudest, and nature has endowed them -- teenagers, and on into their 20s -- with their greatest physical attractiveness to potential mates. Which is to say, when they're at their most likely childbearing age.*

As for "pedophilia", technically that word means an adult having a sexual interest in prepubescent children (usually from around 9 to 13 years old, depending on the sex and the individual child. But even in common parlance it doesn't mean an 18 year old having sex with a 17 year old.

Even calling it "statutory rape" is stretching a law to its snapping point. Would it still be prosecutable as that if she was just one birthday short of 18 and he just one birthday past it?

I realize I'm doing a lot of writing to defend an obvious asswipe, the son of an even worse one. But to me, it's kind of scary how anti-sex our society has become (on both sides of the aisle!), to the point that we would seriously consider sending a young person to prison over it.
