A Federal Judge awrded Boston saxophonist Charles Murrell III roughly $2.75 million after members of the white supremacist group Patriot Front assaulted him during a 2022 march.

Murrell was walking to the Boston Public Library to perform when members of the group, more than 100 of whom were marching through the city masked and carrying shields, attacked him.

According to his lawsuit, they knocked him down with metal shields, kicked and beat him until he lost consciousness, and shouted racist slurs during the assault.

Murrell testified that as his vision began going black, he feared they were going to kill him.

No one was arrested.

U.S. District Judge Indira Talwani wrote that the attackers later showed “no remorse” and instead “glorified the attack” by posting video of Murrell being pinned against a light pole and shoved toward a busy road.

Murrell said damage to his hands now causes them to lock up after playing saxophone for several hours, affecting both his livelihood and one of the central parts of his life.

The court awarded him $25,000 for physical injuries, $500,000 for psychological distress and $230,000 for lost wages and employment opportunities. Then came another $2 million in punitive damages.

Patriot Front and its leader, Thomas Rousseau, never responded to the lawsuit or appeared in court, resulting in a default judgment.

A Black musician was beaten unconscious in broad daylight by masked white supremacists. Nobody was arrested. It took a civil lawsuit to produce anything resembling accountability.

I'm sure that there's another side to the story, but ...  imo, the attackers shouldn't be able to hide behind an organization. 

Sorta like doctors who hide in medical cases.

Our legal system needs a reboot.
