Great White Hunter Bungalow Bills used to make rugs out of tiger hides, and ashtrays out of gorilla hands after they had been hunted. Now I guess they use them for candy trays.

It's one thing to hunt non-endangered prey species with high reproduction rates for food (including most animals with horns or antlers). There are certainly worse ways for animals to die -- like being raised on a ranch to be slaughtered and "processed". But hunting an animal primarily or solely to obtain an animal part "trophy" is sick, IMHO. And doing that to animals at the top of the intelligence ladder, like elephants, cetaceans, and our fellow apes (or to ANY animal on the Endangered list, for ANY reason) is downright EVIL,IMHO.

Without effective natural predators to do so t may be a mercy to cull very old and sick megafauna.

Even if that neat is unsuitable for humans, zoos might use it for big cats or other carnivores. 

Gamma treatment could eliminate disease and parasites without actual cooking.   There is no remnant radiation danger.
