A new report by Oxfam International finds the wealthiest 0.1% of the world’s people are hiding more than $2.8 trillion in offshore accounts to avoid paying taxes. The number represents more wealth than is owned by the poorest half of humanity, more than 4 billion people.

Yes, this is true. A report released by
Oxfam International in April 2026 confirms these figures as part of an analysis marking the 10th anniversary of the Panama Papers.

Key Findings from the Report
  • The Wealth Gap: The wealthiest 0.1% of the global population holds approximately $2.84 trillion in untaxed offshore wealth.
  • Comparison to Global Poverty: This $2.84 trillion exceeds the total combined wealth of the poorest half of humanity, which is roughly 4.1 billion people.
  • Total Hidden Wealth: Oxfam estimates that a total of $3.55 trillion in untaxed wealth was stashed in offshore tax havens and unreported accounts as of 2024.
  • Concentration within the Elite: Within that top 0.1%, the even smaller "ultra-wealthy" 0.01% holds about half of that hidden amount, roughly $1.77 trillion.

Context & Impact
The report, titled to highlight the persistence of offshore tax evasion despite a decade of reform efforts, argues that these hidden funds deprive governments of essential revenue for public services like hospitals and schools. According to Oxfam International, this sum is larger than the entire GDP of France and more than double the combined GDP of the world's 44 least-developed countries.

We have a problem here without going offshore.

While the little guy pays taxes on his income then has to borrow the rich get to borrow against their wealth that they do not have too pay taxes on to get cash.

And that's not even counting the trillions and trillions of dollars of income and wealth owned by those at the very tip-top that their lobbyists have legally exempted from taxation over the last half century, with only the most lukewarm of pushback by Democrats. Starting with Reagan, the United States has gradually become a tax haven for the ultra-rich, like some Caribbean island nation.

I'm only surprised that, while he was telling America that we'll have to abolish stuff like Medicare/Medicaid, food for malnourished children, energy assistance for freezing or baking seniors, the rest of the social safety net and, of course, any suggestion of environmental protection, in order to start paying for his disastrous War-On-A-Whim with Iran (without touching a dime of his $5 TRILLION tax cut giveaway for the rich and super-rich, naturally), Trump didn't call for yet another round of multi-trillion dollar tax cuts for billionaires.

Do paying taxes scratch it at all? The numbers are so extreme taxes do little.
