Top Tennessee Republicans announced a partnership with the conservative political group Turning Point USA on Dec. 12, pledging to launch chapters in every public high school and college in the state.

The news came during an unpublicized meeting between Republican officials and Turning Point leaders at the State Capitol, part of which was streamed on social media platform Rumble.

Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson, R-Franklin and U.S. Sen. Marsha Blackburn announced the partnership, along with Josh Thifault, who is senior director of both Turning Point USA and its political arm, Turning Point Action. Johnson said the state is prepared to defend the effort in court if challenged.

Turning Point USA is a Christian conservative nonprofit group founded by Charlie Kirk, who was shot to death during a political debate in Utah this year. The group’s mission is to train youth in American exceptionalism and the founding principles, while “eradicating wokeism” from the church and “waking up believers to their biblical responsibility to fight for freedom.”

Speaking on behalf of Gov. Bill Lee, Johnson announced that the state would work with Turning Point USA "with a shared goal of establishing Turning Point chapters at every high school, every college, every university campus in our great state in honor of Charlie Kirk."

Thifault said weeks before Kirk’s death, he made a goal to establish 20,000 Club America chapters across the country.

“You look at the cultural aftershocks of 9-10 and all of a sudden, it's possible. All these governors want to work with us. All of these politicians want to work with us. All these celebrities who never wanted anything to do with Turning Point want to work with us,” Thifault said. “We're no longer a politically themed nonprofit. We are a larger-than-life social organization."

Johnson warned school administrators that the state will not tolerate resistance to the effort.

“Anyone who attempts to thwart the organization of Turning Point chapters or Club America chapters in Tennessee will face serious consequences, including possible legal action,” he said.

Blackburn, who is running for governor and was endorsed by Turning Point Action this week, shared her excitement about the state government’s new effort.

"One of the things that I so appreciated having conversations with Charlie Kirk about was the importance of robust, respectful bipartisan debate,” said Blackburn.

"We are so grateful that the state has stepped up to take a position to say we are going to be here to encourage our young people to show their faith, to show their commitment to the country and to do their part to get our great nation back on track,” she added.

The details of the state's role in the partnership were not made clear. But a spokesperson for Lee said that no state funding has been allocated to Turning Point USA.

The Tennessee Department of Education and Turning Point USA did not immediately respond to emailed questions.

Texas and Florida have existing partnerships with the group.

Lee shared a video message at the meeting.

“I am encouraged to see significant interest from Tennessee students in starting Club America chapters, an effort that will give students an opportunity to respectfully engage in the issues that shape our country,” Lee said.
