The 2024 WDCPFF Program:

Doppelganger (Sobowtor)


This riveting psychological thriller, which won multiple awards at the Gdynia Film Festival, including Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Cinematography, is set in the late 1970s when spies from the Polish People’s Republic were stealing identities in the West.

More John le Carré than James Bond, the characters' actions ultimately reveal much more than we expect. Read more

Little Rose 2 (Rozyczka 2)


Originally inspired by the true story of Polish writer Pawel Jasienica, whose wife was coerced into spying on him by the secret police, this film now follows their daughter. Despite her own tragedy, she decides to uncover her mother's secrets. Polish film stars Magdalena Boczarska and Robert Więckiewicz bravely open doors meant to remain closed forever. Read more

If I Were You (Na Twoim Miejscu)


A typical young married couple spends all their time together arguing until one morning they wake up in each other's bodies. Now, the wife must navigate life in the man's world while the husband discovers what it means to be a woman. In a time when much is said about gender, this film offers a fresh and humorous perspective. The only way to truly understand someone else's point of view is to inhabit their body, if not their soul. Scarborn (Kos)


Winner of the Best Film award at the Gdynia Film Festival, "Kos" is set in 1794 and tells the story of General Tadeusz "Kos" Kościuszko's return to Poland after supporting George Washington and the American Revolution. He aims to ignite an uprising against the Russians. However, he is pursued by the vicious Russian cavalry captain, Dunin, who is determined to stop him at any cost. Read more

Woman Of (Kobieta z)


Premiering at the Venice Film Festival, this Polish film breaks new ground by confronting one of our time's most controversial social subjects. Starring Małgorzata Krzysztofik-Hajewska and Joanna Kulig (Cold War), "Woman of..." is a sensitive and intelligent story of gender identity in a harsh world that struggles to accept it and the personal love that ultimately triumphs. Ultima Thule


Winner of the Best Film (Small Budget) at the Gdynia Film Festival, this film stars Jakub Gierszal (Doppelgänger) as a young man who journeys to a forbiddingly cruel island. The Feast of Fire (Swieto Ognia)


The opening film at the Gdynia Film Festival, directed by Kinga Dębska, starring Paulina Pytlak (Best New Actress) and Kinga Preiss (Best Supporting Actress), tells the story of two young women. One is a ballerina, while the other is a child battling a debilitating disease. Despite their physical limitations, they triumph in the end. The audience responded with a standing ovation.
