I have some disappointing news: Justice Democrats-endorsed Junaid Ahmed narrowly lost his primary fight in Illinois’ 8th congressional district to a corporate-backed opponent yesterday.
This was the first primary election where AIPAC, Crypto, and AI combined forces to buy a seat in Congress, and unfortunately, they succeeded.
They flooded this district with over $6 million in the final month of the race to prop up a right-wing politician, outspending Junaid by more than 5 to 1.
The winner, former corporate Congresswoman Melissa Bean, embodies the exact type of establishment Democrat that voters are fed up with: another corporate shill who will rubber-stamp Wall Street and Silicon Valley’s billionaire agenda — which is exactly why these lobbies joined forces to elect her.
Make no mistake: this loss is a blow to our democracy and a failure of the Democratic establishment that has allowed lobbies like AIPAC, Crypto, and AI to buy our elections.
Junaid is the type of leader Democratic voters are clamoring for — someone unbought with the political courage to take on these corporate lobbies head-on and deliver a bold, progressive vision that meets the demands of working-class communities in IL and nationwide.
It took AIPAC, AI, and Crypto coming together to spend millions whitewashing Bean’s right-wing record in Congress to elect her.
We may have lost this one, but the corporate establishment has to pull out every stop to even have a chance of winning races this cycle — and that’s a signal of our movement’s power.
