Bad news: Justice Democrats-endorsed Kat Abughazaleh narrowly lost to Evanston Mayor Daniel Biss in a crowded open primary with sixteen candidates in Illinois’ 9th congressional district.
Good news: AIPAC’s candidate lost, too.
The Israel lobby group spent over $7 million in this race boosting Laura Fine and attacking Kat in the final week through two different shell PACs: Elect Chicago Women PAC and Chicago Progressive Partnership. Two Super PACs named intentionally to obscure AIPAC’s funding.
Despite spending more than anyone in the race, AIPAC lost resoundingly, failing in their brash attempt to buy every open seat in Illinois this cycle. In contrast, Kat ran a historic grassroots campaign, raising $4 million from over 67,000 donors.
Her campaign was an inspiration to millions of young people and people disillusioned with our political system, reminding them that they do deserve better from their leaders.
Her goal, win or lose, was to ensure this campaign would have a direct positive impact on the community in IL-09. She turned her campaign office into a mutual aid hub that collects and distributes toiletries, hygiene products, clothes, books, bags, sanitation supplies, NARCAN, diapers, food, and more.
Though Kat narrowly lost this race, we are proud to have backed this campaign that helped ensure the people of IL-09 would not be represented by another AIPAC shill.
This outcome is a massive loss for AIPAC as they lose more and more influence within the Democratic Party. No amount of shell PACs or covert funding can hide their toxicity from Democratic voters — their monopoly over this Party’s agenda is coming to an end.
Thanks again for everything you did to support Kat and our team. Now, it’s on to the next one.
