On January 30th, the Office of Postsecondary Education released a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM), "Reimagining and Improving Student Education," which proposes a definition of professional degrees for the purpose of capping federal graduate student loan borrowing.
CWLA has drafted a sign-on comment in opposition to the NPRM's proposed definition of “professional degree,” which excludes social work and other vital human service degrees. You can read the letter here.
As outlined in the letter, the exclusion of Master of Social Work degrees and similar degrees from the definition of "professional degree" will be detrimental to the child welfare field. A well-trained and well-staffed child welfare workforce is vital to the goals of the administration, legislators, and the broader community. With high rates of staff turnover and position vacancies, the child welfare workforce is in crisis, and this proposed rule will make it worse. Right now, we need more educated and qualified social workers entering the child welfare field, but by choosing to limit the definition of “professional degrees” and excluding social work from it, the Department of Education will make it more difficult for individuals pursuing graduate degrees to obtain a degree in social work.
Comments are due by Monday, March 2nd. Joining this comment does not preclude groups from submitting their own additional comment on this change.
Please consider signing on by filling out this form by noon on Monday, March 2nd to be included in our letter. Please reach out to Kati Mapa, CWLA Director of Public Policy, with any questions.
