Rampant gun violence, which now includes tangible threats and blatant violations from agents of the federal government, continues to impact students, families, and the professionals who support them. The soaring pressure and extraordinary demands confronting educational, healthcare, and human services workers are having a profound impact on all levels of the workforce, leaving many well-meaning professionals feeling overwhelmed, under-supervised, and highly susceptible to primary and secondary traumatic stress.
As one result, the Child Welfare League of America (CWLA) and Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence (TU) are partnering with associated professionals to provide safe and structured forums for interdisciplinary educators and human service workers about effective and respectful methods that reduce and minimize the harmful impact of gun violence and workforce stress, increase morale and productivity, and enhance professional alliances.
This three-session training series will offer a Five-Step Approach that addresses the emotional labor that educational and human services professionals encounter every day: by strengthening organizational resilience and school safety, establishing cohesive interdisciplinary teams within and across helping systems, and cultivating trustworthy spaces for self-preservation and wellness on personal and professional dimensions.
Participants will engage in facilitated, skills-based sessions grounded in real-world case examples and systems consultation practice. The training will emphasize practical tools that can be applied immediately—whether responding to an acute crisis or navigating the cumulative stress of ongoing exposure to trauma.
The series will be facilitated by Dr. Michael Schultz, CWLA Senior Fellow and author of Systems Consultation When Trauma Strikes: Stories of Hope, Collaboration, and Change, Second Edition, and Abbey Clements, Executive Director of Teachers Unify to End Gun Violence and survivor of the Sandy Hook school tragedy.
