Direct Contracting for Health Services: Considerations for Policymakers

One of the ways some employers and providers are attempting to counteract rising health insurance costs is through a model called direct contracting. In a direct contracting agreement, employers negotiate directly with providers for medical services, eliminating third-party administrators and giving employers the flexibility to customize what they provide to employees. Early evidence suggests direct contracting can achieve cost reduction and may improve quality. In a new analysis, Rockefeller Institute Senior Fellow for Health Policy Courtney Burke details this new(ish) approach to health insurance and explains the dimensions policymakers should keep an eye on to ensure a sustainable healthcare marketplace and accessible, equitable outcomes for the insured.
