CEPR Co-Director Mark Weisbrot talked this week with KPFA’s Against the Grain about the latest developments in the Trump administration’s coercive approach to Venezuela.

See full transcript here.

Mark discussed the US’s illegal unilateral economic sanctions, which have taken the lives of tens of thousands of people and likely more than that; and the United States’ illegal military strikes on Venezuela and abduction of President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores. He also explained how the five congressional War Powers’ resolutions introduced in Congress since October 8, including the fifth one that advanced in the Senate on Thursday, have created real pressure on the Trump administration as can be shown by their responses; despite that they do not care about the rule of law.

He discusses some of the economics and politics of the rise of social democratic governments in Latin America in the 21st century; the changes that they made both at home and in the hemisphere; and some of the regime change efforts with which the US government responded to them.

Mark Weisbrot is Co-Director of the Center for Economic and Policy Research in Washington, DC. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Michigan. He is author of the book Failed: What the "Experts" Got Wrong About the Global Economy (Oxford University Press), co-author, with Dean Baker, of Social Security: The Phony Crisis (University of Chicago Press), and has written numerous research papers on economic policy.
