ET: Ranking Member Maxine Waters and House Democrats Hold Press Conference at Supreme Court Ahead of Historic Oral Arguments on Trump’s Attempts to Fire Governor Lisa Cook and Undermine Fed Independence   WASHINGTON, D.C. - Next Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. ET, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-CA), the top Democrat on the House Financial Services Committee, and House Democrats will hold a press conference in front of the U.S. Supreme Court ahead of oral arguments in support of Federal Reserve Board Governor Lisa Cook. The case follows a lower court’s decision last year, to block the Trump Administration’s attempt to unlawfully remove Governor Cook from her position after making baseless claims against her. Wednesday’s oral arguments will determine whether Governor Cook can remain in her position while she fights Trump’s unlawful attempt to fire her. Since returning to the White House, the Trump Administration has systematically worked to weaken the Federal Reserve’s independence. That effort escalated last week when the Department of Justice served the Federal Reserve with grand jury subpoenas threatening a criminal indictment of Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell. During the press conference, Congresswoman Waters and House Democrats will stand in support of Governor Cook and make clear that the Trump Administration’s actions are about political control, not accountability or the rule of law, even if it puts families, workers, and the broader economy at risk.
