A police officer responding to a house burglary in a suburban LaGrange neighborhood confronted a suspect with a rifle after entering the house. The suspect then hit him with the rifle and the officer shot him dead, police said this morning. Four other suspects were arrested and the officers were not seriously hurt.
The suspect fatally shot will be the subject of an autopsy later today, state police from Troop K said. The Dutchess County Sheriff's Office also responded to the scene.
State police issued this
release: "On Monday, May 14, 2012, at approximately 10:20 p.m., the New
York State Police at Troop K responded to a private residence on
Hettinger Lane in the Town of LaGrange after the Dutchess County 911
answering point received a telephonic report of a possible home
invasion/burglary in progress.
"Upon arrival, one Trooper
entered the residence as another went to the rear of the home to secure
the area. The Trooper who entered the residence was confronted by an
individual possessing a rifle. The armed individual then struck the
Trooper with that weapon. This individual, whose name will be released
in the near future, was shot by the Trooper and pronounced dead at the
scene and has since been removed to the Dutchess County Medical
Examiner’s Office for an autopsy that will be conducted later today.
"Four
other defendants who participated in the home invasion/burglary were
later apprehended by responding members of the New York State Police and
Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office. The subjects were apprehended without
significant incident and were transported to the State Police barracks
in Poughkeepsie where they are currently being processed. They will be
arraigned later today on felony robbery and burglary charges.
"The two troopers were treated at St. Francis Hospital and released.
"Given
the ongoing and evolving nature of the investigation, no further
information will be released until later this afternoon."
