to Police Scanner Calls Dutchess County
Kathryn Filiberti
.
Stephen Shand was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison this morning
in Dutchess County Court for the killing of 18-year-old Kathryn
Filiberti in March 2011.
Shand waived his right to appeal any aspects of the case, during court
proceedings, which began just after 11 a.m. and lasted just under a
half-hour.
Members of the Dutchess County District Attorney's Office read victim
impact statements from Filiberti's mother and 12-year-old sister.
Shand, 24, entered guilty pleas May 9 to charges of first-degree
murder and predatory sexual assault, both felonies.
In exchange for the plea, Judge Stephen L. Greller had promised Shand
a sentence of no more than 40 years to life.
Shand is not eligible for parole for at least 40 years, according to
Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office.
Filiberti’s body was found March 19, 2011, in a little-used park on
Greentree Drive North in Hyde Park.
At the time of the slaying, Shand worked for his sister, who had a
contract with the Poughkeepsie Journal, delivering papers in the Hyde
Park area.
