I don't know about any free converter that would really do a good job with pdf. The best free one I found is Calibre. The best of all (including the paid ones) IMHO is Adobe Acrobat and Nitro. Nitro has also a free cloud-based conversion tool.
I've tried the free PDF-->Word converters, but they usually use a bunch of text boxes to accomplish the conversion and they also put paragraph breaks at the end of each line on the screen. I'm not sure what the PB compiler will do with those, so i haven't spent any time trying to compile them.

In my last company, I had to do something similar, but found that converting pdfs to word docs with Adobe Pro X and XI to barely have usable results - 90% of the time the formatting was wrecked and the conversion only saved me time from retyping everything - I still had to proof, because acrobat occasionally added letters or symbols to random words., 30% of the time, the conversions were so off/fragmented, it really was better that I manually retyped large portions of the document.
So, I was curious is there a good PDF to Doc converter out there that I can run on a desktop - cannot do online converters due to the sensitivity of the documents. I would gladly pay for the software assuming it actually worked better than Adobe Acrobat Pro.
Just open the PDF in Word... PDFReflow has been in Word since 2013 version. I never understood why businesses feel the need to "edit" PDF files. It's like wanting to take white out to a bunch of printed pages when what they should be doing is getting a hold of the original word documents that were used to create the PDF files. If you can't get a hold of the originals cut and paste the text of the poorly converted documents into a new, correctly formatted word document.

I think that You will need an extra application like Adobe Acrobat. Converting PDF to Word is not so easy (on any OS). I tried this once on a Windows PC, but the result was so bad, that I gave up. I don't know how many documents You have and what You need them for. But sometimes it is just quicker to just copy the text from the PDF and to paste it in a word editor and to edit it there.
Also, you may try this tutorial about how to convert PDF files to Word on Mac. Once they're converted, you can open the files Microsoft Word or a compatible word processor.

If you want to try it out, you can download one of the free 30-day trial packages from Adobe that include Acrobat Pro X (such as Adobe Creative Suite 6 Design Standard),

Almost all PDF editors include conversion tools. It's just one of many different tools they feature, like OCR software and eSign software. Generally, they'll all convert to the popular filetypes, with some variations and extras, such as converting PDF to JPG, depending on the platform. PDFs can be frustratingly stubborn when you need to make a change. That's partly why they were created: to create a standardized document that displays the same whatever platform or device it's opened on.
