Age Dropping In Florida? Online gambling has become more prevalent all
across the US and spans all different age groups. College students are
among the group of people where Internet gambling is growing the most.
In the state of Florida, that trend may soon also extend to land based
casinos.

Two new Bills have been passed in the Senate Regulated Industries
Committee in Florida that, if signed into law, would lower the legal
gambling age from twenty one to eighteen. That could create a whole
new revenue stream for casinos.

The main reason for the change was to have a uniform system across the
board. Currently, an eighteen year old cannot play slots, blackjack,
or any other Class III casino games. They can, however, play poker,
the lottery, and gamble at horse tracks.

"We wanted it to be uniform all the way across," said the sponsor of
the Bill and Chairman of the committee that passed the Bill, Dennis
Jones, "We felt that eighteen was a good age. The committee also felt
that bringing expanded gambling to Florida was a good idea.

Under the Bills that were passed, the Seminole Indian tribe would gain
access to In other words, their casinos would be full blown gaming
establishments like the ones found in Las Vegas.

Pari-mutuels would receive expanded gambling options as well. They
would be permitted to offer blackjack and Vegas style slots at their
tracks. There are already opponents that have come out against the
Bill because of the age change.

"You're talking about opening up all kinds of gambling to the young,
to the highest risk gambling groups," Pat Fowler, Executive Director
of the Florida Council on Compulsive Gambling told the Tallahassee
Bureau, "The majority of them don't have a real grip on finances and a
budget."

When told of Fowler's comments, Herbert Clancey quickly gave his
rebuttal, saying, "I disagree totally. There are thousands of adults
who cannot balance their own check books, but are allowed to gamble
legally in a casino. College students most of the time are better off
financially to gamble then people who have families to support and
monthly bills to pay."
