Perhapsmost excitingly, 2018 will see the introduction on a National Leaderboard, where points will be allocated to participants simply for playing, with all entrants standing a chance to win the title of MonsterJam Poker Tournament Player Of The Year.

A world-class poker series, the MonsterJam Poker Tournament will take place at Sun International casinos across South Africa. To help participants and spectators make the most of this national event, Sun International will also be offering incredible accommodation specials at participating properties.

As the first national poker tournament in South Africa, Sun International is thrilled to host the tournament at seven of its casinos across the country. Having kicked off at Carnival City Casino in February, MonsterJam moved on to Sun City in April, with stops at GrandWest, Wild Coast Sun, the Boardwalk, Sibaya and Time Square to follow.

Each stop along the tour will feature a number of competitions and events, designed to suit players of varying skill and experience. Satellite tournaments will run alongside the main event, which offers players a lower buy-in from just R500. Those who are keen to up the stakes can enter the Grand Slam Hi-roller event, where the buy-in is R40 000 and Super Slam Super Hi-roller events, where the buy-in sits at R150 000. The satellite tournaments also allows players to win a seat at other tournaments, which gives smaller players a chance to get in on the action at a lower cost.

The World Series of Poker Africa (WSOPA) is the second expansion effort of World Series of Poker-branded poker tournaments outside the United States. Since 1970, participants had to travel to Las Vegas if they wanted to compete in the World Series of Poker (WSOP). Although the WSOP started holding circuit events in 2005 in other states, the main tournaments, which awarded bracelets to the winners, were exclusively held in Las Vegas. In 2007, the inaugural World Series of Poker Europe marked the first time that a WSOP bracelet was awarded outside Las Vegas.[1] In 2010, the WSOP expanded overseas once again, only this time to Gauteng, South Africa. While the WSOPE awarded bracelets, the WSOPA was considered a circuit event with the winners receiving Championship Rings instead of bracelets. The WSOPA did not occur in 2011, but the series of tournaments resumed in 2012.

The first WSOPA was held in October 2010 at the Emerald Resort & Casino in Vanderbijlpark near Johannesburg, South Africa. Emerald Resort and Casino CEO Martin Rice said "Poker has, over the past half-decade, accelerated in popularity. Our Emerald Poker Series, and its growing fields, is testament to the unlimited success of the sport. It was only natural to follow-on its popularity with the greatest tournament on the planet."[2] The tournament consisted of two events, which were a $1,100 Pot-Limit Omaha event with $300 rebuys and the $5,000 No Limit "Main Event."

Although the 2010 event was part of the WSOP Circuit, winners did not earn a gold ring or standing for the WSOP Circuit National Championship, both of which were common for other circuit events.[3] This policy changed in 2012.[4]

Off of the felt, players can enjoy breathtaking safaris at Ivory Tree Lodge, Black Rhino Park, and Sabi River Resorts; world-class golf at Arabella Country Estate and Hermanus Golf Course; a cultural tour of the historic town of Soweto; and mouth-watering dining at Cube Tasting Kitchen, moyo, and the dozens of fine dining and contemporary eateries available at Emperors Palace.

The All Africa Poker Tournament (which is also known as the AAPT) is a major poker tournament in Africa and is part of the World Poker Tour. It is, in fact, a series of four poker tournaments that are held over the course of a year.

The All Africa Poker Tournament was once a casual tournament with players sitting around and dealing their own games. It was officially launched in February 2005 with 90 players. Since then it has grown to host 120 players and it is considered a world class event. It has been given the nickname the "Richest Poker Tournament in Africa" and it certainly has succeeded in making some instant millionaires. It takes place four times a year and awards seats to the prestigious World Series of Poker. All four of the All Africa Poker Tournaments are aired on African television, particularly, although not exclusively, in South Africa.

With most major poker tournaments being held in the northern hemisphere, the All Africa Poker Tournament is a big draw for poker professionals in the southern hemisphere. It is held at the Pigg's Peak Hotel and Casino in Swaziland. It is now running its 11th season and it continues to attract players of note. Some well-known poker players who can be found at the All Africa Poker Tournament are Christopher Convery, Peter Vermass, Ryan Brauer, Raymond Rahme, Neville Eber and Ryan Eber (who are father and son). Some local celebrities who are making a name for themselves at the All Africa Poker Tournament include Alex Jay, Danny K and Neil Andrews.

The All Africa Poker Tournament, besides for their monetary prizes, offers seats to the World Series of Poker. Most recently, they offered nine such seats. Part of Team All Africa at the 2009 WSOP will include Raymond Rahme, Michael Simoes, Greg Ronaldson, Peter Vermaas, Gordon Harris, James Gubb, Ryan Eber, Darren Miller, Nik Rujevic, David Spangenberg, Reynhart van Rooyen and Allistair Didloff.

As poker seems to have taken the world, or many parts of it, by storm, a glance at poker in Africa shows that poker has also become a popular form of entertainment in this area. There are several countries within the regions of Africa and out of them all, South Africa appear to be the one with the most interest in poker in Africa. Texas Hold'em seems to be the favorite attraction amongst the poker players in Africa.

It is interesting to note that South Africa has its own online poker room, in the name of Piggs Peak. The Piggs Peak Casino that contains an online poker room enables players to play a range of casino games and online poker in Africa. Poker players in Africa may take advantage of the convenience elements to play poker online and enjoy all of the attractions of online gaming. It should be noted that playing poker at Piggs Peak allows African poker players to compete against each other in their own currency.

With regards to the matter of the legalities of online poker in South Africa, it seems to come down to whether or not poker is considered a game of skill rather than a form of gambling. However, online gaming appears to be the subject of legislation discussions and battles within South Africa. In the Central African Republic there do not appear to be laws prohibiting gambling.

The presence and success of poker tournaments in Africa suggests the appeal of poker in Africa. In the same way that poker tournaments have become very popular in other parts of the world, such events are a great attraction also in South Africa. The All Africa Poker Tournament is held four times a year in Swaziland and offers large prizes in Rand. It is interesting to note that this tournament is sponsored by Piggs Peak and is hosted at the Piggs Peak hotel and casino in Swaziland.

It may appear a little strange for the All Africa Poker Tournament to take place in Africa with all the poverty in the region, but the fact that this series takes place four times a year cannot be ignored.

Poker enthusiasts in Africa may also view poker entertainment on TV. There is an All Africa Poker TV channel that includes a range of poker shows and tournaments such as the World Poker Tour and the European Poker Tour. The existence of the poker TV channel does seem to suggest the interest and enthusiasm regarding the subject of poker in Africa.

While online poker undoubtedly has its benefits, sometimes you will want to take a break from your computer screen and interact with other human beings at the poker table. The good news, as far as this is concerned, is that South Africa has a wealth of live poker rooms and tables spread across its 1.2million square kilometres.

From No Limit Hold'Em to Pot Limit Omaha and from regular low buy-in cash games to World Poker Tour and World Series of Poker tournaments, the country's live poker scene has it all. Here are just some of the best places that you can go to play live poker in South Africa.

Located on Frikkie Meyer Blvd in Gauteng, the Emerald Resort and Casino made history in 2012 when it became the first ever African casino to host a World Series of Poker circuit event. The US$3,300 buy-in event was won by a South African player, Joe Rahme, for more than US$158,000 (R1.7m), while the 2013 version saw former World Series of Poker player of the year Michael Mizrachi take the top prize.

The Emerald Casino's poker room has six tables in action all year round, and hosts a weekly R300 tournament with a prizepool of up to R12,000. This means there is something for players of all budgets and abilities, whether you prefer tournament poker or cash games.
