Maybe it was already asked before and if so, I am sorry for taking your time with this, but I have upgraded to Windows 11 and both Quake and Quake II stopped working (Quake 1, in particular, shows "wad could not be loaded" error, among others). I tried several engines to no avail. Is there a workaround to this? How can I run Quake and Quake II without having to reinstall both?

Thanks for respoinding. It's a pity there is currently no Windows 11-ready solution. I had to buy a new machine, and it is impossible to downgrade to Windows 7 on this machine, as it has Windows 11 embedded from the plant. But thanks anyway. I will try the compatibility mode solution and then, if it does not work, wait for a new engine / solution that will support Windows 11. Hopefully it appears, eventually.

vs windows 11 that comes with malware preinstalled and leaves you in violation of the gdpr as soon as you save an email address to 'your' drive? (unless you paid about $1000 for the enterprise version, which also happens to be unavailable unless you're buying about 1000+ licenses at a time).
but yes, there's a number of issues faced by games running on win11 that were not an issue in win7, though they usually don't stop you from getting in-game.

'wad could not be loaded'. the only wad quake actually uses is gfx.wad found inside id1/pak0.pak - if you're running quake without that pak file relative to your working directory then the fault is on your(or the docs) part. you can't just run it and expect it to magically know where you installed the game data.

Hey there dumptruck_ds, huge fan of your YouTube channel! Microsoft isn't done patching W11, Chinese insiders @ Baidu say the final release will be simply called Windows 12 (so it won't be free this time). Not sure if it's true but a good benchmark is the absence of a LTSC/IoT edition of W11 in 2 years. In comparison, W10 got LTSB with it's initial release from beta in 2015 (or maybe like 3 month later at most). This makes me think any W11 version is beta at best before W11 LTSC/IoT is released.

Microsoft is still patching Windows 10, or was till recently with new features. I am on Windows 11, and some things really don't work as well as Windows 10, but it's about as good as the previous Windows version. Also I think Windows 12 will also have even more data collection than before, so I'm sure it will be free since you're transitioning from being the customer to being the product.

EDIT: Figured it out - maybe someone will stumble on this thread searching for answers. I had to re-assign my physical CD-R drive to a lower letter than Daemon Tools. So now I mounted the game.cue for Quake under Daemon Tools to D: and my CD-R drive is set to Y: and music is working!

So I know there are tons of threads out there floating around on the internet about this, and I've successfully gotten the music to work with GLQuake on my Windows XP system by simply mounting the image included with the GOG release of Quake. I've done the exact same thing on my Windows 98 system and it's not working, I'm pretty much at a loss here. Things that I've tried:

1. Create a MUSIC folder in the Quake directory, trying both .OGG and .MP3 files (starting at Track02-Track09) in it
2. Same as above but putting the MUSIC folder under ID1 subdirectory
3. Extracting QUAKESPASM into my Quake directory, renaming Quakespasm.exe to GLquake.exe and launching it. This resulted in a complaint that the system doesn't have enough memory, or something about a .DLL error
4. Putting an audio CD into my CD drive, this works, Quake plays whatever disc I put into my drive, obviously REM doesn't really match the vibe of Quake so...
5. Mounting all 3 of the included disc images with DaemonTools, ensuring that the drive letters assigned are lower than my DVD/CDRW drive (which is D:)

It's kind of driving me up the wall at this point, and I may just buy an original copy off of eBay, but that bugs me too seeing how I already purchased it on GOG. What am I missing here? Like I said, mounting the image with Daemon Tools on my Windows XP system works just fine, I cannot figure out what is different about trying to do it on 98.

Daemon Tools CD audio relies on the kind of drivers you use for your soundcard. WDM drivers support that, VXD drivers do not. AFAIK Windows XP only supports WDM, which is why you got audio working there, but not on Win9x. So just try changing drivers on Win9x, I did that with SB Live and Yamaha PCI soundcards.

If I resize and move, then do mabox-terminal save inside the same quake terminal that I just opened, everything is OK. Whenever I toggle the visibility of the quake-terminal, position and size are OK, as long as I do not close definitely the quake terminal (exit).

As soon as I close the quake-term windows, the position and size is lost. In this last screenshot, you can see that even I still have the correct new position and size in .quake-term file, the newly quake-like terminal opens in the default position, which is where the terminator program defines as default for default profile. Maybe this last thing got to do something with it.

Wait, you have an Intel Core i7 running Windows 10 and have only 6GB of space? Your going to need more space than that if you are going to run any good Quake mods. If you have the slot and you cannot afford to buy a bigger SDD I would recommend buying a small SD card with at least 16GB of space. My entire Quake mod directory takes up more space than 6GB.

This is my go-to as well, but if that is not your flavor you could try the Mark V engine. Some Quake mappers like DumptruckDS use that one also. If you want some Quake mod and map suggestions I can point you in the right direction too.

Pretty sure even an old i7 will handle the simpler Quake source ports without a problem so long as the graphics unit is passable decent. Ports are generally more advanced and demanding than the original engine for sure but it's ultimately still 26 year old tech. Don't use Winquake, as others have pointed out that's old and not likely to work well. Just try some of the ports others have suggested. They cannot damage your computer, they just might run like ass.

I think you missed my points. It's a 26 year old game. Unless you are running a laptop from the late 90s, its going to run unless it's a super cheap graphics unit and even a cheap laptop's screen resolution is at least comparable height wise to what was around then. And again attempting to run it will do no harm. Download, experiment, see what works. One of the quakespasm variants is your best shot.

Obviously. I was using hyperbole to illustrate my point. But then i saw your subsequent post. If even the steam supplied engine runs poorly then the graphics chip must be very bad and unless there's a port designed exclusively for low end systems I've not heard of. What is the actual graphics chip? What other games can you run?

The default Steam launch option runs in DOSbox, which for a game like Quake might be A Bit Of An Ask for the extreme low-end. WinQuake and GLQuake are the original 90s releases, which means they probably have some weirdness on modern Windows.

You can now set Windows Terminal Preview as your default terminal emulator on Windows! This means that any command line application will launch inside your selected terminal emulator (i.e. double click on PowerShell and it will open inside Windows Terminal Preview by default ?). This setting is currently in the Windows Insider Program Dev Channel build and can be found inside the console property sheet. We have also added this setting to the settings UI in Windows Terminal Preview.
