We kick off National Poetry Month with the first in a series of poems by poets who will be presenters at the Nebraska Book Festival. Don Welch of Kearney- teacher/ mentor/ friend to so many- leads the way!
THE WORD IS NOT FREE
by Don Welch
--a poem for poetry month
The word is not free.
It is ordered by letters.
Letters are not free.
They give themselves to words.
Sense is free only
to gather itself,
as it subjects itself
to a period.
Tell them
that’s why I wrote,
a clause in search
of myself,
towards sentences
that might have been lost.
Tell them
I bowed my head
to one word after
another;
that, free to go,
I was ordered
by others.
