On
Sunday, November 9, the Troy-based open mic,
2nd Sunday @ 2: Poetry + Prose will celebrate
15 years of providing a monthly venue for writers to showcase their work. The series, now at
Collar Works on 4th Street, began at the
Arts Center of the Capital Region. Jill Rafferty-Weinsch, the director of the Arts Center at the time, asked Dan Wilcox (of Albany) & Nancy Klepsch (of Troy) if they could organize an open mic for writers & offered the Center’s black box theater for the event. The first reading took place on November 14, 2010. Since then, the reading has always been an open mic for poets & prose writers, no featured readers, no fee/donation.
When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down all such events, the series continued briefly as an online
Zoom event. Then when the Arts Center was able to be open to the public it did not have funding to stay open on Sundays;
2nd Sunday @ 2 simply could not be held on any other day. Eventually, Dan & Nancy partnered with Avery Stempel at
Collar City Mushrooms in August 2021 to hold the open mic in his space on 2nd Ave. in Troy.
Collar City Mushrooms moved to
Indian Ladder Farm in December 2024.
The series bounced around to temporary venues until they were invited to partner with the Troy arts collective,
Collar Works, where they continue each month. The co-hosts, Nancy & Dan, pride themselves on maintaining an open, welcoming venue for all writers, a safe place for expressive works on any topic or point of view, including social justice issues, & a welcoming place for transgender and non-binary writers.
2nd Sunday @ 2: Poetry + Prose takes place at
Collar Works, 50 4th St., Troy, NY at, well as the title says, at 2:00 PM on the 2nd Sunday of each month — free & open to all. Come share your work.
