When you see the brilliant authors we will welcome this fall, from acclaimed masters to dynamic and diverse new voices, this is what 42 looks like. Bold. Confident. Expansive. A wide-angle view of humanity.

Be enlightened. Join the conversation.

― Paul Grondahl, Opalka Endowed Director, NYS Writers Institute

The New York State Writers Institute is proud to announce our Fall 2025 season, building on 42 years of sparking thoughtful dialogue through literature, provocative ideas, and public engagement.

Among the more than two dozen scheduled events, highlights include:

  8th Annual Abany Book Festival (Saturday, Sept. 27);
  Valeria Luiselli, MacArthur Fellow and author of Lost Children Archive;
  André Aciman, celebrated author of Call Me by Your Name;
  Scott Turow, bestselling legal thriller author;
  Ruth Reichl and Mark Kurlansky in a special culinary conversation;
  Peter Wolf, longtime frontman for the J. Geils Band;
  Edward Hirsch, renowned poet and president of the Guggenheim Foundation.

Along with conversations with novelists, poets, and newsmakers, our season also features opportunities for more audience engagement. We invite you to join us for a marathon reading of William Kennedy's 1975 novel Legsthe story of gangster and Albany bootlegger Jack 'Legs' Diamond, on Wednesday, Nov. 5. We will present "Telling the Truth" on Friday, Nov. 14, discussing two themes:  “Rethinking American Politics” and “Standing on Principles.”

We'll close our season on Tuesday, Dec. 2, with a public conversation featuring faculty from the University at Albany’s AI & Society College and Research Center
