Hello lovelies,
I'm writing to share with you the link to pre-order my upcoming book
An Armsfull of Birds: A Field Guide to Love, Loss, and Commitment (HCI Books, May 2026).
It's a memoir about addiction, recovery, losing my partner to suicide, and climate grief. It tells the story of developing deeply held commitments to ourselves, to those we love, and ultimately to the ailing natural world. This book has been exquisitely challenging to write, but I believe in the merit of what has resulted.
Simply put: this story is what I have to contribute to the planet at this time. I hope you will receive it in that spirit. Also -- if I say so myself -- it's not not funny. There were times when I snort laughed writing it. Not as much as I cried, but maybe close. (My beloved Jon would have expected nothing less.)
Pre-ordering helps authors for a few reasons (all likely having to do with algorithms). I'm encouraging folks to buy it through Bookshop (linked above) or directly from your local independent bookstore. Also, if you know of someone who might be interested in or benefit from this book, please do share the link.
I'll be doing readings out and about in the world to support the book (first up: May 20 at P&T Knitwear, NYC). Please holler back if you are connected with a book club, reading series, bookstore, writing workshop, recovery center, land trust, outdoors organization, community center (you get the picture) and think I'd be a good fit to offer a workshop, a reading, a conversation, a talk.
Sending this note with best wishes for you and for us all.
Warmly,
Cara
