Cheryl Clarke is an American lesbian poet, essayist, educator and Black feminist community activist. She is the author of eight books of poetry, includingArchive of Style: New and Selected Poems, as well as the literary study After Mecca: Women Poets and the Black Arts Movement, and the collection Days of Good Looks: Prose and Poetry. Forthcoming in 2026, from Sinister Wisdom Press is Acts of Resistance: Essays and Archival Encounters. She is a co-organizer, since 2013, of the annual three day Hobart Festival of Women Writers, which brings up to 20 professional women writers to the Hobart Book Village to conduct writing workshops and public readings. i come to the cityfor protection and to witness the thick transactions of women and women and dance with my head. My turns are calculated to end on the right foot to subdue the hip movements. The city fumes with expectations and the smells of women wanting women. I been in love six times in the last six months and ain t done tryin yet.
