Gathering at Bright Hill Library to Honor the Life & Art of Treadwell Artist Barbara Scheck

At 3 pm on Saturday, July 21, Bright Hill Literary Center in Treadwell will host a gathering in the BH Library to honor the life and memory of Treadwell artist Barbara Scheck, who
Barbara Scheck with two Paper Sculptures
died in Maryland on May 6, 2012.  Representative works by Barbara, provided by her brother, Delhi artist Gerald Scheck, will be displayed, and fellow artists and residents will have an opportunity to speak about Barbara, after which there will be a light refreshment dish-or drink-to-pass in the gallery and Bright Hill's Community Garden. Several members of Barbara's family will be at the gathering, as will her beloved dog, Buster, who is now living in Walton.
Barbara Scheck was born in Englewood, NJ, and  December 26, 1943 and died May 6, 2012. She moved to Treadwell from River Edge, New Jersey in 1977, and established her studio in Treadwell. Her medium was handmade paper combined with natural elements to create three-dimensional works of art. She studied interior design at Southwestern College in San Diego, but changed her media to drawing, painting, and fabric sculpture before learning the art of papermaking. She also studied with Catskills region artists Frank Eckmair and Phil Young; and nationallyn-known artists Judy Chicago, Elaine Koretsky, Joe Wilfer, and Helen Frederick.
In 1983 Barbara attended the International Paper Conference in Kyoto, Japan and also studied with two Japanese masters of papermaking, Asao Shimura and Chi Kikuchi. Her work has been shown in San Diego, CA; Lenox and Boston, MA; Annapolis and Baltimore, MD; Chicago, IL; Austin, TX; Duran, Germany; Kyoto, Japan; and throughout New York. Her work is also in many corporate and private collections throughout the U.S. and internationally. During her career, she taught papermaking privately and in schools and lectured about and demonstrated her craft in museums and on television.
Barbara was eloquent about her art, saying, "The ritual of making paper, coloring pulp or not, adding other materials, manipulating pulp, imbedding images or objects alloss infinite possibilities of expression. My art consists of finished works made one sheet at a time in the traditional manner, and different shapes that are often multi-dimensional and can be highly textured." From natural cycles to circles to the natural world itself, the unifying theme in her work was nature. She was versatile, using her experiences, especially her travels, in her work; her most memorable journey was a road trip with 94-year-old Treadwell resident Dot Millard in 1987;  the trip resulted in a video produced by Scheck, called "'Road' Is My Middle Name."
In the 1990s Barbara began a second career as a Reiki therapist and Swedish accupressure masseuse; she was a first and second master in Reiki and later studied accupressure in Ithaca.
