The annual Hudson Valley New Year’s Day Spoken Word/Performance Extravaganza will take place in Saugerties on January 1st for its seventh year in the area. The six-hour event will feature more than 100 performers–poets, writers and musicians– drawn from the Hudson Valley region. In the spirit of democracy, the event will also include open mic performances.
This year’s extravaganza will open with an audience-wide HOWL led by performance artist Linda Montano. Among the many other notable performers will be Michael Bisio, Lawrence Carr, Elizabeth Clark, Steve Gorn, Josepha Gutelius, Ken Holland, Carolyn Marosy, Jana Martin, George Quasha, Nina Shengold, Sam Truitt and Jim Yanda.
“We’re especially pleased to be performing in the heart of Saugerties village,” said poet and art historian Bruce Weber, producer of the long-running show, which he started in New York City in 1995. “The location gives us an opportunity to inspire a wide community with poetry, music and stories.”
Admission is free. Donations will be gratefully accepted: books for the Greene
Correctional Facility and non-perishable food or drink for the Saugerties Food
Pantry, which particularly needs boxed tea and cocoa mix, Spam, toothbrushes
and toothpaste. The food pantry provides food for nearly 250 men, women and
children in the area each month.
Stage sets by Saugerties artist Joanne Pagano Weber will reflect the Aurora theme.
