from our very own Marvin

Brooklyn Idyll

We lived for a time
in Brooklyn...in an apartment
facing the back
as we used to say
meaning the side of the building
that did not overlook the street
but looked out instead
on the backyards
of other people...
and an elm tree...

We were young
we called it The Tree...
a thing of the natural world
that no one owned
or tinkered with...

In time its branches
reached the fire escape
clattering when the wind blew
and moonlight...casting
shadows of the metal rungs
on the bedroom wall...

we slept...

The tree had always been there...
and did in time what trees will do
it sang the plainsong of its roots
in the sacred,,,sun-drenched air...

An absolutely wonderful poem, Marvin. It is sparse in words yet richly descriptive, and richly evocative in mood.

Best regards,
David

Marvin -

This is such a powerful image:

it sang the plainsong of its roots
in the sacred,,,sun-drenched air..”

Love it, and the poem.
