Im told that the way to delete save files in game is to press UP + Select + B, which I can only assume means UP + x + z on the keyboard. This is what I've done, but UP and z seem to be ignored, and things simply progress as though I'd only pressed the x button. I have started a new game regardless, though I'm not very far in. Good thing since I learned what happened to others after they beat the pokemon league.

Now, for my old game, I saved both savestates and savefiles, and I don't actually want to delete my old game. I just want to play the game all the way through again and do it differently. Regarding the savefiles, I read that the extension is supposed to be .dsv. I can find no such files, and yet I have saved in game (old game). Furthermore, I've read that the savestates should end in .ds1-0; my savestates end in .dst. I am using a mac, but I don't know if that's what accounts for the difference or if it's something else.

I'm otherwise quite happy with the emulator; it's really just this one problem. Since there doesn't seem to be any other way, is it possible to make a copy of the ROM? Maybe that way I can play the game in different ways without deleting old ones, but I just don't know. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

Check your input mappings in your DeSmuME Preferences. By default, the input mappings for Up/Select/B are the keyboard keys Up Arrow/Tab/Z. The keys you're pressing (Up Arrow/X/Z) are mapped to Up/A/B -- not the correct input combo for deleting the save.

Also make sure to read the FAQ, specifically the Mac Users section. It tells you that your DeSmuME files can be shown by choosing File > Reveal Game Data Folder in Finder. Your in-game saves (the .dsv files) will be in the Battery folder. Save State Slot files (.ds#) will be in the Save States folder.

Save State files can have either the .dst or .ds# file extension, depending on how they are saved. They are functionally identical. However, their usage is different, which is why two methods exist for saving them.

Save State files can be saved in one of two ways:

1. An external Save State file (.dst): Choose File > Save State As. This allows you to save the Save State file where you want, but you need to keep track of its associated ROM so that it loads correctly. Best used if you want to use your Save State across multiple computers, create a Save State archive, allow for Time Machine backups, and so on.

2. A slotted Save State file (.ds#): Choose File > Save State Slot > Slot #. DeSmuME keeps track of the ROM association for you, but you are limited to only 10 slots. Best used for doing quick save-load cycles during gameplay.

Note that if you want to save your game data long term, do not rely on Save States (.ds# or .dst). Make backups of your in-game saves (.dsv) instead. Save States are prone to breaking between DeSmuME versions (and possibly if different emulation settings are used), but your in-game saves will continue to work. Understand that Save States are a short term solution.

The DeSmuME files have no differences between the Mac port, Windows port, or any other DeSmuME port. They are interchangeable, just as long as you place the files in the correct locations for DeSmuME to read. Again, on the Mac version, use File > Reveal Game Data Folder in Finder to view your DeSmuME files.

Excellent. Thank you very much! Pity I couldn't save the file I'd already started, but thankfully I wasn't very far in, so starting from the beginning wasn't too bad. I put the save file for my old game on an external hard drive, so I didn't have to truly delete it.

i cant bring up the bag where items/pokemon/pokedex/etc can be accessed anyone know why? the control configuration should be enter/return button on mac and it doesnt work and using X doesnt work, please help

no. youre not playing GBA pokemon, and it should not be the start button nor the enter key. it should be the X button which may be any key on your keyboard according to the default key bindings. i recommend pressing every key on your keyboard until it works.

Hey, no matter what key I assign the start button to, I can't use it. I downloaded 9.4 binary for windows. I'm trying to play pokemon platinum on a dell xps with vista. The comp is brand new so i don't think it should be my computer. I can play the game fine, just can't get to the in game start menu which is a minor annoyance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Sorry for my bad spelling.

you know whats weird. ive never heard this complaint before, but ive heard general complaints about the start button, and general complaints about buttons in pokemon. hmmm. but those i can never reproduce.

Are you saying that someone asked me why he couldnt do something in the emulator that he couldnt do in the real game anyway because it is nonexistent? And that he didnt know because he had never bothered to play the game on the hardware?

iPodFan would you ()#@ing pokemon players please describe the problem exactly? We dont know anything about pokemon. Literally hundreds of people complain about this but nobody can tell us anything coherent. I have high hopes for you: Did you SAVE while playing or use SAVE STATES? If you SAVED then there is not some problem with "desmume's save feature" but rather some bug that is pokemon specific that might be making a new game+ not work. Do you expect to be able to make a new game+ or do you expect to be able to load the old savefile in its condition just before the end? In that case, is the game supposed to be flagged in some way such that when you load your save file the game behaves differently? Sort of an old game+?

When you beat the game or elite4, it will bring you back to the start menu after you finish watching the ending credits. The game will start with your character at home which is normal and you can continue with your post elite4 gameplay. If you are getting this, then it is working normally.

lol or if your game starts over with that Professor Rowan or whatever, then you're screwed if you don't have a savestate before the ending credits. If you do have a usable savestate, follow the faq again. Try it until it works, cuz it should eventually.

You dont have a valid dsv file. I dont know why desmume isnt importing your old sav correctly, but the log says it isnt and the dsv is clearly too small. Try getting that dsv imported correctly such that you can load your savegame without using a savestate and then see how it works after the elite four.

Unfortunately, desmume hasn't been able to save throughout the time I've been playing the game... which is why I was using save states. It'd be really nice to know what variable is making it work for some people....

it hasnt been able to save because you initialized it with the wrong save type, probably by starting the savegame on an older version of desmume and failing to manually select the correct save size. i cant think of any way for users to fix that with the current codebase.

well it saves correctly for me in linux on the latest svn, although i get some communication error immediately after trying to load the savefile which may be due to recent changes in emulation core. are you using 64bits os?

I've tried SVN and it works as you described above (hanging after the error). I've also tried saving using a friend's win32 machine (XP) and it doesn't work, so don't waste your time chasing a phantom 64-bit bug.

i am having the same problem with pokemon platinum. using windows vista 32bit, desume 0.94

desmume saves a .dsv file small as 8kb, but when i go into pokemon platinum load window it doesn't recognize the .dsv and it prompts to start the game again as new.

.dst files work though, i can load from there and .ds1 .ds2 files

i created a .sav using export battery but when importing nothing it back nothing happens.

this though won't be a problem until i get into elite four and new game + i could use save state to continue.

ok, i successfully added a hack to the 0.9.4 branch, since 0.9.5 will have trouble loading 0.9.4 savestates, which enables you to upgrade your save type to the correct size. This will get released at some point; we'll post news when it does.

1. load the game and savestate

2. delete any dsv or sav file just to be safe.

3. config > save type > select the right savefile type (4mbit for pokemon) which is what you should have done to begin with

4. config > save type > FORCE AS CURRENT (thats the new hack). there is no feedback after you do this, it just magically works.

5. proceed to save in-game

6. exit emulator, reopen, and verify that you can load your ingame savefile

I have Pokemon Platinum and there's this weird bug where my pokemon doesn't cry, doesn't make a sound when it pops out of a pokeball and doesn't make a sound when its stats are lowered or raised. I've found a solution to this problem by changing the sound output to mono and it works fine on NO$GBA, but is there such a setting on Desmume? I'd much rather use Desmume than NO$GBA, so any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

There's no such setting in desmume. Most likely explanation: It's probably a "surround" sound and your system is mixing two channels to one--this can make some sounds vanish. So: stop mixing two channels to one (fix your faulty headphones or headphones jack). Or, maybe your system is expanding 2 channels to 5.1 and then your headphones are recombining them. Nocash sending mono output is likely to make your system not expand those channels, but play them in every ear, which may bypass the problem at the combining stage.
