As some of you know, my podcast has been going for nearly 100 episodes and
will be 1 year old in May. Since moving to Podshow in November, my figures
have been going up month by month steadily. The other day, I was just under
1000 downloads for the month which is a lot for me. On Tuesday I checked it
and it jumped to nearly 2000 downloads and then on Wednesday it jumped to
6000! What's going on?

The first question is, what are you counting? Total downloads, or
unique IP addresses?
Both have problems, but the latter is much closer to an accurate
listener figure. Some people use podcast clients with technologies
that don't just download the file in one piece -- they make HTTP range
requests and download small chunks of the file, which leads to dozens
or hundreds of hits. If all you're counting is file requests, this
can artificially multiply your numbers vastly. And some podcast
clients are just broken, and will sometimes restart a download over
and over without ever getting the file. (I've had cases where I got
over 80,000 requests for a file from one IP address. I block those
sorts of addresses when I see them; that sort of abuse can slow down a
Web server.)
So you should never be counting total downloads. Unique IP addresses
is a good start. Tracking "last byte" delivery is even better, but
whether you have access to that data depends on where and how you're
hosting.
If the stats you're reporting *are* unique IP addresses or otherwise
filtering out bad hits, then congratulations. You must have been
mentioned somewhere big. Check the referrals in your Web logs to see
where all those people are coming from, and/or search for sites
linking to you in Google or Technorati. When you find out who's made
you popular, send them a nice e-mail. Or bake them cookies.

Steve, Podshow calls them "requests" which I am presuming is total downloads
rather than unique IP.
I'll leave the cake baking for the moment. My blog stats are consistent over
the same period. A Google search reveals nothing unusual either.

Steve gave a pretty good explanation of what to look for in a previous
email, but if your looking for a service that gives you you accurate
reporting data feel free to message me offline about our Statistics
Service, we have a huge number of podcasters migrating to it and thus
far everyone is pretty happy with the data we are breaking out. We will
be introducing some plus features soon for those paying for the service
that will give them a much deeper look at the data.

Unsolicited plug: I'm paying Todd's company for the RawVoice
Statistics service, and I'm quite happy with it so far. Libsyn's
stats are fine for a quick glance at one's numbers for internal
planning (or ego), but as I started selling my own sponsorships I had
a need for clear, easy-to-read metrics and PDF reports that I could
give to other people. This was the solution that met my needs. As
far as I know, no one else is doing this as an affordable third-party
service independent of ad sales.

Todd, I signed up for the stats via Blubrry but I am not sure how it works
in relation to Podshow.

Unless you control your rss feed and links to the media on your show
page I am not sure if you can use the service with Podshow. You will
have to ask podshow support if the support third party stats systems. We
have a few podcasters that are hosted over at podshow that still control
their primary rss feed. If you control your rss feed you should be able
to utilize the redirect. Take a look at my site and see how the media
links on the webpage and in the rss feed is formated. If your using
wordpress it's pretty easy to implement.

Todd/all
I know I can control the link that goes onto my website when I put the WP
audio code in and other links on my site but as for any links on Podshow
itself, I will have to look further into it tonight.
Thanks for your help.

Host a free online
conference on IM.
I thought it was just me, but I just spoke withsomeone who has the same problem. You submit a validated feed to iTunes, the graphic shows up on the submission page, when the podcast shows up - NO ALBUM ART. In my case I went into feedburner, doublechecked the URL of the image, its fine. Anybody know the cure?

The "album art" doesn't show up where, exactly? If you mean on the
directory page, that's not technically album art. I've observed that
brand new podcasts sometimes take longer for the images named in the
<itunes:image> element to show up than other podcast details. Perhaps
the graphics are retrieved by a different server on a slower update
cycle. Who knows. It does seem to come up eventually, though
sometimes it's a matter of days.
If, however, you mean literal "album art" on the MP3 file, when the
podcast episode plays in iTunes or on the iPod... You do know that
has nothing to do with the feed, right? You have to attach those
images to the MP3 file itself using ID3 tagging.

I had that happen once. Then I remembered I forgot to optimize the image.
It was huge. I suspected it was the file size that was the problem, so I
optimized it and waited. I don't know for sure if that is what the problem
was, but it is showing up for me now. How big is the image that you have
(file size)? Perhaps it is worth a look.

Two things may cause the issue:
1) My understanding is that it has to be a jpg and NOT a .gif
and
2) If you are using Photoshop, be sure you are using the "Save for
web" choice rather than "save as". The latter adds a lot of meta junk
to the image that iTunes doesn't like.

I have no idea if these are related. I went into itunes and requested the album art. The next day it was in iTunes. Go figure...
