Hi all:

My podcast artwork is showing up in the iTunes Music Store. However,
when my podcast is played in iTunes, the artwork is not being
displayed. I have heard that Chapter Tool will solve this problem,
but I am running XP on a PC. Is there a PC based solution?

-Thanks,

Jon

Hi John,

The easiest way I know of is using iTunes for Windows. It's a free download.
You can edit all the ID3 tags.

Brian:

That must be the source of the problem. So, what I need to do is
add the artwork to the id3 tag when I convert the file to an MP3
file within Audacity?

i'm not sure audacity has a field for artwork in its id3 editor

as posted above, you can do it in itunes

also, if you google for id3 editor windows you might find a utility to do it
after export from audacity

on the mac, i use something called "id3x" -- not sure they make a windows
version

The easiest way, if you don't use iTunes, is to open the file using Windows
Media Player, right-click on the filename and select "Advanced Tag Editor",
click on the picture tab and add your picture. Save.

I do all my ID3 tag editing in Media Player.

Yeah Audacity has a crude and cumbersome ID tag editor which won't
handle art work and has an annoying and limited genre list option. I
was wondering about this question too -- ie: about adding the artwork
--and iTunes will do the job --unfortunately!-- as the Big Gorilla has
to be fired up just for a quick ID edit. ..and I gather you have to
import the file into the iTunes library to edit the tags, then upload
from the iTunes default library folder.

This is right, eh?

You learn somthing new everyday...

But hey! It works. Why go chasing another editor with bells and
whistles on it you don't need when you have iTunes -- IF only for
Quick Time (if not using Quick Time Alternative) or IF only for
checking your listing in the Big Music Store.

Just on the FireAnt thing about changing the file names...when you use
the "Media Items" option or review your podcasts in 'Library'
there's no change in what you get to read. In fact the information
delivered is much more comprehensive than other podcatchers, I've
used, as it relies on the Show Notes.

"Library" also arranges your Mp3 downloads into either audio or video;
and then by day they were downloaded .And I find the "Save AS" option
as a susbtitute for synching works fine when I load up my iRiver.

Of course if you try to do it another way -- by using another program
to synch, after downloading your files to FireAnt, then you are in
trouble as the new file names, where they occur, will be confusing to
you.

Hey there,

Saw this thread and had to comment because displaying thumbnail images
is unfrotunately very hard for video podcasts... harder than it seems
to be for audio where you can embed an image in the file header with
ID3 tags.

So, here's how we handle video thumbnails with FireAnt (which
admittedly is not yet perfected). We have 3 products, FireAnt on
Windows and Mac, and FireAnt.tv, our website. Each of these products
is different at the moment and I'm only going to address FireAnt on
Windows and FireAnt.tv (FireAnt Mac does not yet support thumbnail
images).

Let's start with the website... we have a couple methods for
displaying thumbnail images there. First, we parse the <description>
element for each RSS <item> and look for the following HTML markup
pattern -- if there is a link element where the href attribute matches
the enclosure URL, then we check to see if there is an img element
within that link tag. In other words, this:

<a href="http://link/to/enclosure.mov"><img
src="http://link/to/thumbnail.jpg" /></a>

Thus, its important for video podcasters to include relevant thumbnail
images in their blog posts. Here's an example:

Here's Josh Leo's Videoblog: <http://joshleo.com/vlog/index.php>
And here's his listing in FireAnt: <http://fireant.tv/directory/channel/15275?>

However, it is not very common to see a blogger make it so simple for
us. There are a number of different ways that people use HTML markup
-- it just takes more testing to discover how to route around some of
the issues, and sometimes its simply that people don't include images
in their posts -- just a text link that points to the video.

We have a second way of getting images on FireAnt.tv if this first
method fails. Another website, MeFeedia.com, aggegrates video and
extracts thumbnail images with a server side process. They make these
thumbnail images available to us through an API. If we don't get an
image the first way, then we check to see if MeFeedia.com has it.

Unfortunately this method is not often reliable and when it is
successful, it returns small images that we have to scale up which
then look distorted. The other problem is that since the video maker
didn't choose the image, there is no way for MeFeedia to know which
video frame is a good representation of the video.

We're working on still a third way of getting images on FireAnt.tv,
but its still experimental. We're hoping it will improve our success
rate in this area, which is admittedly not what we'd like it to be at
the moment.

So, after that long-winded description, here's what we do on the
client side with FireAnt on Windows...

We only display images after the file has been downloaded, and only if
you have "show descriptions" enabled (you can disable this from the
right-click menu). Once a video is downloaded, FireAnt will extract a
thumbnail image from the file. iTunes is similar in this regard, but
we deal with many different video formats in addition to Quicktime, so
this can actually be quite challenging. At the moment, we're pretty
good at getting the images for Windows Media Videos, not as good at
getting them for Quicktime videos.

For Quicktime videos, we are 100% successful if the video has a
"poster image" set. You can set the poster image using Quicktime Pro
or other editor. This is great because then we know the video maker
has selected an appropriate image. If there is no poster image set, we
often get a blank frame or have to guess which frame represents the
video. This is something that we need to work on.

We have not yet addressed images in audio files... looks like we
should as that is probably low hanging fruit...

Hope some of this is helpful...

-Josh
