Just want to rant about this ...

I had heard that the Henson Company was putting out a podcast some time ago.
At that time I went to the site and it did not appear that the podcast had
started .. so I forgot about it.

Today I heard (on another podcast) a reference to the Henson Podcast .. so I
once again investigated it. I found a webpage with an icon to subscribe ..
but it was *only* for iTunes .. AND .. my browser (Firefox) gave me an error
message when I clicked on it (right clicking didn't work either).

I looked, and looked for an address to send a question/comment to the Henson
Company about this .. without success. Yes, address for other things .. but
not for this type of question/comment. ("We are too busy")

Well, I did some investigating (and ran the page in Internet Explorer ..
which helped) and eventually found the feed was on Feedburner and by
replacing the itpc with http I was able to get JUICE to recognize the feed.

I then did find an RSS feed at a podcast directory .. but no link to that
directory was on the Henson website.

Pod Hosts take note:

Not everyone is this dedicated. Your podcast feed should be the
easiest damn thing to find on your site and abroad. Always validate
your feeds, too.

http://www.henson.com/podcast.php

The 'Subscribe' button requires Flash to be installed, which is a bit
ridiculous. Not all web users have Flash installed. Flash can be a
bit flakey under FreeBSD and Linux, for example. Other people may
have Flash installed but disabled for all "untrusted" sites (this is
what I do) for security or performance reasons.

Anyway, it seems the embedded Flash code tells the operating system to
open the URL:

itpc://feeds.feedburner.com/HensonPodcast

... and so presumably the error you saw was because your OS has no
program associated with itpc:// links. Certainly this would be the
case if iTunes is not installed.

It is as though the Henson.com webmaster has gone out of their way to
prevent anyone not using iTunes from subscribing to their podcast
feed. It's bad enough when web sites only provide an ITMS link to
their podcast (these links begin with 'http://phobos.apple.com/'), but
this is on another level altogether.

From here it's not obvious how to retrieve the XML RSS feed from the
itpc:// link, but replacing itpc:// with http:// does seem to work,
however their feed does not validate:

http://feedvalidator.org/check.cgi?url=http%3A%2F%2Ffeeds.feedburner.com%2FHensonPodcast

Also in their RSS feed they have length="0" in the enclosure tag for
all enclosures, telling the podcast aggregator software that the file
size of all their podcasts is zero. This seems like a bit of a
dubious thing to do.

Regards
Andrew

Hi.

I'm the HOST of the Henson.com podcast. (Please read that again, HOST. :) )

When the podcast first started, I was creating the feed. I made sure all the feed was valid
and that it was simple and straight forward to subscribe with ANY podcatcher.

Awhile back Henson decided to redesign their website and bring all the feed making 'in
house'. (I just freelance) So there have been bumps like this since then.

The good news is I'm in this group, I read your posts (and the replies) and I've forwarded
them on to the company. They are good about responding to things like this and so
hopefully this will inspire some tweaks.

THANKS for this feedback. It is appreciated.

Oh and for future reference - podcast@henson.com

:)

Grant
