Does anyone know a way to initiate warm ups manually, or run programs even when it thinks a warm up is needed?

I came back to the NC off for a week, and it required only a 10 minute warm-up. I ran a program, then I changed the tool probe setting in linuxcnc and restarted it. Before running more programs, it required a 50 minute warm-up.

Thank you!

Hi Jen,

We do not suggest running any programs when the machine requires a warm-up as doing so can cause damage to the spindle bearings.

As I am sure you know, the machine should have required a 50 minute warm-up after that week on inactivity. The behavior you described is odd and should probably be investigated further. After running the 50 minute warm-up did everything seem to function correctly? Have you been prompted for a 10 minute warm-up since then?

Thanks,

Jen,

We have yet to track down exactly what happened here, but it definitely seems you encountered a bug in our software. Is it possible that while the 10 minute warm up was running your machine crossed the 7-day limit to trigger need for the full warm-up?

It is possible to start either warm-up sequence at any time, through MDI.
M670 will start the 1-hour warm-up, M671 for the 10 minute routine.
Attempting to run the short routine when the full warm-up is needed will trigger an E-stop.

That Gcode is good to know.

Is there a warm up program that PocketNC has created that will warm up all stepper motors and spindle motor all at the same time?  I would find this a handy procedure.

Hi Richard,

We have not created a warm-up program for the stepper motors since no damage can be done by running the machine with the stepper motors cold. But, as I am sure you can imagine, all it would take is running all 5 axes simultaneously for a few minutes. One way you could do this is by programming a 5 axis Swarf operation in Fusion for the top of a 3" cube and then just run that code for 10 minutes or so.

I hope that helps!

Thanks for your help.

Good to know the MDI for doing a 50 minute warm-up in cases like this when it's needed. I've been using it every day and it is functioning like normal now, so I imagine it's because I had just crossed the 1 week clock while doing the 10 minute warm-up. I'll keep track if this happens again.
