I'm contemplating getting the 1/4 speed reducer to increase low end torque as travel speeds can't really take advantage of 50k rpm for most ops. However, it's listed of having a maximum rpm of 30k, so the warmup cycle would be above it's rated speed. Would it be possible to have a setting which changes the warm up maximum speed?

Thanks,
Aaron

Hi Aaron,

Thank you for your inquiry about changing the maximum warm-up speed! We have a potential in-house solution, but it is not fully tested (and thus, not covered by warranty). I will reach out privately by email with the details to see if you are interested in giving it a try!

Thank you,

What about a non warranty busting software tweak?

Matt can confirm, but I think he means the warranty on the spindle and perhaps the motor. NSK has a predefined warmup sequence, though I can't seem to find the documentation. They don't want to cover spindle damage out of the manufacturer recommendation. He is providing a software solution.

So Matt, if I adopt this, then the spindle/motor won't be covered any more, will there still be warranty on the rest of the machine?

Hi Aaron,

I mainly meant on the spindle/motor, but it would depend on what kind of issues (if any) manifested. If damage was caused directly from the work-around, it would not be covered by warranty. However, if something very obviously unrelated had an issue, we would likely be able to warranty that. Something like this would be a case-by-case scenario, so if you decided you wanted to move forward with this we could have more in-depth conversations to make sure everyone is on the same page on the front end.

Thank you,

I'd imagine that Nakanishi could advise on an alternative schedule for the warm up with reduced rpm, the main thing is that it gets warm and distributes the oil so it would probably be done for longer. That said the fact your max rpm is lower may mean it is not actually as critical.

I scanned the manual when I got a replacement spindle, you can download it here:

Cheers,

Graham
