Have you made sure that the Xming application is launched in the background?

It should show up in background programs in the lower right (windows) or show up in your applications window at the bottom of the screen (Mac).

Here are a few things you can check on... brought to you by
http://desktopartisan.blogspot.com/

1) Make sure you installed the software per Pocket NC instructions...

And that XMing is running in the system tray

2) Double check the USB cable is FULLY inserted AND connects to the computer AND BeagleBone show up with a drive letter.

3) Next open a command prompt and try pinging 192.168.7.2 it is the IP address we input into the Putty screen

5) Make sure Putty also has this set...

6) Next launch Putty by double clicking loading the configuration and hitting Open

7) At the Putty terminal screen input pocketnc and hit enter

8) at the next Putty terminal screen input linuxcnc and hit enter

9) The Machinekit inital screen loads and hit OK

9) At this point the main CNC program called AXIS should be launched

10) Hit the little button I highlighted to start the serveos

11) Next hit the HOME software button to home the axis.

12) At this point you can play around and start the spindle move the tables etc...

I hope this helps!

So you are able to ping the 192.168.7.2 successfully?
And see BeagleBone show up as a drive letter?

It's possible you might have a firewall problem of some kind...
It's wierd that is says connection refused...

Try going here and see if you get connected to BeagleBone

Try entering this in a web browser
If you do that you should get a connected screen like this...

I can ping the address and I can see the drive letter. how would i check if it's a firewall issue?

First were you also able to go to https://beagleboard.org/getting-started#step3
and in a web browser enter http://192.168.7.2
And see BeagleBone connected????

And did you install latest XMing? per the instruction I sent directly to you???

What type of computer are you on and what operating system?

Are you absolutely sure you have this setting correct?
Because if I uncheck that box I get the exact same error as you do...

If it is checked on...
Make sure that the configuration file has been actually loaded...
then open putty...
and type you pocketnc command
then linuxcnc command...

It dies on me without it checked on the linuxcnc line if it is NOT checked...

Make sure once you configured the Putty settings to save them.

Then make sure you actually load the settings.

Then open putty...

then type pocketnc enter

then type linuxcnc enter

then hit ok when machinekit screen appears...

Make sure you hit load

Thanks for your help Randy,  you've covered all the main troubleshooting points for this error.  If nothing else, it's good to have all of this available in one thread on the forum!

Shane,

It would be helpful to know what kind of computer you are using to connect to the Pocket NC, and we can go from there.

The alternative methods of connecting to the machine are through ethernet, which is similar to the USB method so I don't know if you'd have any more luck that way.  The other option is to plug in an HDMI screen, mouse, and keyboard directly to the machine which is far less likely to have issues as there is no ssh connection required.

We'll get it worked out!

Michelle

I'm having a similar issue except I can't connect through putty to the beaglebone. Beaglebone shows up as a drive as soon as I plug into my machine, but when I try and connect I keep getting a "Network Error: Connection Timed Out" message. I'm not able to ping 192.168.7.2 from a command prompt. Xming is running in the background. One day it was working just fine and the next I cant figure out what's wrong. I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything. Thanks,

-Scott

Scott,

Are you still having issues with this or did you get it figured out? What version of Windows are you running?
