Frommy personal experience I can recommend to directly contact the PPA owner (if we talk about PPA) to kindly ask him/her to prepare packages for needed (usually newer, so supported release) with steps below:
In some cases a package meant for an older release of Ubuntu works in a newer release, too. This is currently the case with my ppa-purge PPA; see the website for instructions. Note that the official ppa-purge has had the same version 0.2.8+bzr63 since Ubuntu Xenial (16.04).
So I've downloaded jre-6u23-windows-i586.exe and when I try to run it, it causes a page fault and craps out. I can unpack it using 7-zip, but I'm not sure what to do with the contents (just move them around over-top my existing install of JRE 5 update 22?).
Not quite, actually. the JRE's have a major revision number and then an update number. JRE5 is a prior version than JRE6. Then you have to consider update numbers from there. JRE6u22 is an earlier version than JRE6u23.
As I understand it, the major revision number involves how the Runtime handles Java code. If that gets changed, the Java applets become incompatible. As for updates that goes for adding new features, bug fixes, and changes - all that don't break backwards compatibility.
You may be able to get higher versions to work properly with KernelEx, but I will say the last version I have here on my Windows ME disk that I know that works with 98/ME is JRE6U6. You can download prior versions of Java software here:
Here it goes like that with KernelEx installed for the latest java runtimes. I run the executable which seems to autoexit without doing anything. In fact it extracts an msi installer + cab file to a subfolder of C:\Windows\Application Data\Sun\Java named as the version to install. Then I run the msi installer from there and it installs normally. Just installed the newly released update 24 today, no problems.
I tried 8u8 firefox acted like there was nothing at all and told me i need to dl java, i'm trying 6u24 now. even if it doesn't work on FF i'm gonna see if it is good enough to run this java psp emulator.
Microsoft provides Windows 10 ISO for both Anniversary and Creators update till now. To download that ISO file, you need to change useragent in your PC browser or use a different device other than PC. Here I use Firefox but Chrome can also be used.
Personally, I like to use Jan Krohn's Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool for downloading the ISOs - it is a standalone-tool that will start the requested download from Microsoft's servers. Here is a screenshot of the GUI:
Now click on the "DOWNLOAD" button and a "Download ISO Image" dialog box will appear where you can select between Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 and specify Release (build), Edition, Language and Architecture.
After specifying what to download, click on the Download button in the dialog box and Rufus will start the download and display the download progress bar. (Optionally, you can check the box "Download using a browser" in which case you will get a file download prompt in your default web browser.)
This is because the option "Check for updates" is disabled in Settings. The option name is arguably misleading as it not only blocks Rufus from checking for updates; it blocks all network access, which affects ISO file downloads from third party (Microsoft) servers. So you need to enable "Check for updates" for the "DOWNLOAD" button to appear.
This option is enabled by default and is set to check for updates daily (set to 86400 seconds in registry). Why you find it disabled may be because you have used Rufus earlier with your current user profile and you have opted out of update checking at some point. This is especially true for the regular version of Rufus where all the settings are stored in the Windows registry. So even when you delete the Rufus EXE file, the settings are preserved and can be used the next time you download and run Rufus. The portable version of Rufus stores its settings in the rufus.ini file which it creates automatically the first time it runs. More useful info on regular and portable version of Rufus can be found in Note 1 below.
You need to say Yes here. If you're not seeing the prompt, you can remove your current settings to trigger the prompt once more. For the portable version, you can simply delete the rufus.ini file. For the regular version, you can do either one of the following two things:
If you decide to manually edit your Windows registry, don't delete the entire Akeo Consulting key as Windows can fail to recreate it later on when you run Rufus. In my tests, Windows only recreates it once. If you don't see this key despite having run regular version of Rufus at least once, you can and should manually create the Akeo Consulting\Rufus key hierarchy as a dummy place holder without any values, which Rufus will automatically populate when you run it the next time.
Note 2: As of version 3.15, additional safety checks may require you to explicitly run the EXE file with admin privileges in order to run the download script. Right click on the EXE file and click on "Run as administrator".
Fido is a PowerShell script made by the creator of Rufus. It's the same script that Rufus 3.5 itself uses to download ISO image files of Windows. If you only need to download the ISO file (you don't need to write it to a USB), then all you need is Fido.
With my version of JDownloader Portable, I've added the Java= setting in the optional user configuration file. The end-user can take advantage of this setting which allows you to set the location the launcher looks for JRE for use with JDownloader Portable. When the portable installer downloads JDownloader, it installs a bundled JRE with it. However, I've added the ability to allow the user to override this by changing the location the launcher will look for JRE in the optional user configuration file. This setting (Java=) takes first priority if the portable launcher finds this setting with a value.
I did this so the end-user can choose what he/she prefers to do themselves. If they would like to delete the bundled JRE (which has an older JRE version of 1.8.0_40; the current release is 1.8.0_144) to use an updated version or because not everyone who uses portable apps in the PA.c Format will adhere to the PortableApps.com directory structure using the CommonFiles folder. As well as not everyone is/will be using the jPortable Plugin made available here at PortableApps.com either.
Here are some nifty tips (shared with me at The Portable Freeware Collection by Userfriendly on my thread for JDownloader Portable) for those who use JDownloader and would like to disable those annoying banners and the like, etc. To turn on/off these settings, you can find these options in advanced settings.
Hi, where I can find this option: "I've added the ability to allow the user to override this by changing the location the launcher will look for JRE in the optional user configuration file". So, I need set JRE location, but I dont know how. Can someone help me. Thanks.
Developers whose Joomla extensions support jDownloads in any way, or have developed their own plugins or modules for this purpose, must rework their extensions a little bit to be compatible with jDownloads 4.
This version fixes again some bugs in the frontend and backend. Support for Captcha plugins has also been improved. The hCaptcha plugin and other plugins compatible with ReCaptcha v3 can now also be used. Therefore the support for the old reCaptcha v2 plugin ends. A few CSS and language file corrections are also part of the update.

Feature request: Really miss the feature to have Dropbox default to making all files downloaded and available for offline open/save. I will always, 100% of the time, want Dropbox to keep all my selected-to-sync files to also be downloaded and available for offline use.
