A. Directions to display Maidenhead Grids instead of Latitude/Longitude on Garmin Nuvi 550 & 550 GPS:
1. Select "Where To?"
2. Scroll down to "Coordinates" and select.
3. When "Enter Coordinates" screen appears, then select "Format". (Do not enter a Maidenhead Grid now!)
4. Then select "Maidenhead Grid" and push "OK".
5. Then push "Back" until you return to Main Menu.
Once you have selected Maidenhead Grids, the "Where Am I" display will show current Maidenhead Grid, Elevation, nearest address, & nearest intersection.
B. To go go to a Maidenhead Grid position:
1. Select "Where To"?
2. Select "Coordinates"
3. Enter 6 digit Maidenhead Grid locator and then push "Done".
4. Then push "Go" for mapping.
C. Other notes:
1. The Garmin Nuvi 500 has very detailed topo maps for the lower 49 states. You must be in the "Walking" mode to display this. The 550 DOES NOT have topo maps!
2. The Garmin Nuvi 500 has a driving mode, a bicycle mode, & a walking mode.
3. Garmin Tech Support says that the Nuvi 500 & 550 are the only Nuvi GPSs which have Maidenhead grids. The Nuvi series is primarily for automobile users: e.g. "Turn Left in .5 miles"; "Approaching Destination", etc.
4. The Garmin Nuvi 500 seems to work well for me: My XYL gets to navigate on highways with the 500 & I get to see the VHFer's current position.
