I shouldn’t have any trouble taking my FT-817 in my carry on luggage on an airplane- right???

Any pointers from the experienced?

Depends on which TSA agent you get.  Airlines themselves typically don't care as long as you don't/can't turn it on.  The dingalings at TSA are a whole other matter.

Go do some research at the TSA website as well as the airline websites themselves and have stuff printed out that supports your case.

Most devices are covered because they have batteries.  http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/assistant/batteries.shtm

I travel with my HT in my backpack pouch all the time, 10% of the time
TSA will eviscerate the bag and swab it (along with all the other
consumer electronics in there.) I recently traveled cross-country with
my Icom 706...put it in the bin with the laptop and only had one
delay...a TSA/Ham who wanted to yak about radios.

Essentially, if you're upfront with them (take it out of the carry-on
bag) it should be no different to them than a laptop or camcorder.

Good luck...........Paul

Eric,

I have carried one in my briefcase on several trips with no notice by TSA.  I have a small 45w brick amp that packs well, too.  I pack a mag-mount whip and cigarette lighter power cord in my carry-on suitcase.  I do not keep batteries in the radio.  I wrap the radio in a little bubble wrap to protect from scratches but easily unwarpped if ever they want to inspect it.  A gel-cell battery is more problem for TSA than the radios, so do not think of taking one with you.
